Storage of Batteries, Solar and Covering your motorhome
Yahoo Message Number: 108735
I have a 2005 midbath and I plan on storing it under a canvas or cloth cover. The area where it is stored has no availability of electricity so I can't keep the LD plugged in.  I have solar but cutting a hole in the cover is impractical due to high winds in my area. What should I do with the batteries?   Should I get a charger to keep them topped off?   If so how often should I top them off?  Should I disconnect them when I'm not using the motor home?

We have a disconnect connection at the battery terminal.  When not in use we disconnect.  Here with the high humidity we found a cover not feasible due to mold.  We opted for a covered area vs cover for MH.  You can get breathable covers that might help.  We also put the sticky mouse traps on top of the engine and radiator while storing.  Just to catch any that might want to visit.

Couple of options if you want to do it with solar. The most secure would be to take the cover to a place that sews canvas (auto upholstery etc) and have them sew in a clear vinyl panel over where the solar panel/s are. You could have them include a velcroed cover for the clear panels in case you wish to block light to the solar panels. Make sure the clear vinyl is UV resistant, (I purchased some from McMaster-Carr on-line that would be good for this application as it's intended for outdoor use). You'll lose some effeciency with a clear cover, but it'll still generate plenty of power as long as it's not snow covered.
The other way to use solar, though not as secure, is to use a portable solar panel (solar panels, not mounted, tend to attract thieves).

Hello Group. I had a quick question along these lines...Of the 3 ways I have of recharging my house batteries I believe the shore power (1) and the generator(2) are going to pump 35 amps charge rate if the PD 35 amp converter calls for that. How many amps can I expect from the chevy alternator when spinning to produce?? I am assuming its a 55 amp or better. Thanks John 85FL.
