Death Valley route December 22, 2009, 12:09:13 pm Yahoo Message Number: 108710Thanks all...I'll be leaving here on Monday, 28th..from Grass Valley above Sacramento. When I googled from here to DV, it shows an almost straight shot once I go over to 395....but looking at the map, I'd hit Conway Summit...hmmm... I'm below Reno but....I dislike 99 south from here due to the big rig traffic and slow on-and-off cars...find myself constantly having to get over, get back, get over, get back into my lane as I cruise my customary 55 to 58 mph...also the valley fog this time of year I have good tires, rig is in [I hope!] excellent shape, and I'm learning to be a good snow and ice traveler...grin...I park and wait! Considering the various suggestions, googled for 395 and came across this site...for future travelers... http://www.climber.org/DrivingDirections/395Waypoints.html ...has GPS points for trailheads and turnoffs! I will probably heed Steve S and Lorna, etc....and take either I5 or 99 down and then across to 395...tho I'm really looking forward to traveling 395 in better weather...looks like a wonderful trip! To all who are planning on going, could you contact me privately and help me out with suggestions for what I should be bringing? never done this before, and won't have a toad if I forget something...I have the usual stuff, but that's not taking into account what the group get togethers might require... I want to be prepared!! Gini Free and Junah, canine xtrodinaire "Kooch" our little red home on wheels "Growing old is mandatory. Growing wise is optional."

It's true that 99 does have a lot of truck traffic and many more exits and entries than 5, but it's a more direct route to 58 from where you are. As for the tule fog and any snow/ice conditions over Tehachapi, you will want to check this site for real-time road conditions before heading out: http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgiLike many others, I've driven/campednorthern 395 from Washington to its "almost end" in Ridgecrest; it's a great trip in the late spring through fall.Have fun in DV.Joan
