USB 760 vs UM 175

Many of you use modems (air/data cards) with your computers when traveling, so I guess I can stretch this into a LD-related question.  I have a MacBook Pro and will be upgrading to new Verizon phones with Rev A capability and probably will subscribe to Mobile Broadband Connect.  Both of the referenced modems are available.  Does any of you have any comparison stories to tell?  Why would you pick one over the other?  I am asking the same question on the InternetByDataCard forum.  Feel free to contact me offline.

I have the 760 and am very pleased with it. If you decide to get a wireless router, be sure the modem you chose is compatible with the router you plan to use.

Get a Blackberry or another Smartphone. For $15 a month for 5 mb of data or $30 a month for unlimited data you can use that Smartphone to get internet service for your laptop. Speed is good but about a slow dsl speed. If you get a wireless data card from Verizon it is $50 a month. But to do so you do need to have a data plan and internet service on your Blackberry.

5MB a month is adequate for text messaging and very light email use. But of you spend much time browsing websites, that 5MB will go poof! in two shakes of a mouse's tail. Most of us need a lot more bandwidth than that. Unfortunately, no wireless carrier I know of--and certainly not Verizon--offers a wireless internet plan with "unlimited data." In Verizon's case, the limit is 5 GB per month; use more than that (not hard if you look at any online videos or download any music), and they start billing you by the megabyte.
Mind, I'm not saying that a "tethered" phone (one that's connected to a computer via USB cable) isn't a possible alternative to a USB cellular modem. I've done it in the past, and so have others. It needn't be a costly "smartphone," either--many low-end models can act as cell modems when connected to a computer. But most of us who've tried this approach have eventually migrated to USB cell modems for simplicity's sake.
One thing to keep in mind: if you're having problems with a website and need to get on the phone with tech support, a USB cell modem lets you keep your computer connected to the internet while you use your cell phone to talk through the problem. But with a tethered phone, it's either phone or internet--you can't do both at the same time.

Kurt, to use the Smartphone or PDA with Vzn, you have to have a $60 per month broadband plan + the $15 or $30 extra charge for e-mail, etc.on the phone.  For $50 on the tethered Mobile Broadband Connect, I can do all that on the computer and also shut the plan off when not traveling and don't need it.  That's why I don't need a Smartphone or PDA.  I don't need email access on my cell phone when I have a computer in the LD when traveling.  I' trying to save some bucks.

Chris I love my set up, also on a Mac Book Pro, of Motorola phone and Verizon V740 card modem.  It has worked flawlessly for over a year and during a recent 16,809 cross-country odyssey.  Occasionally, I would even prefer it over "free wi-fi" in some RV parks.  I know nothing about the UM175 though.

Andy recently mentioned the 5GB limitation with the Verizon card/ service.  I don't know what your planned uses are, but I was able to regularly watch certain cable news programs, missed TV shows and various video clips that showed up on favorite political blogs and never once incurred an extra cost.  The Verizon tech I spoke with about this issue informed me that, rather than being billed for overages, I would most likely experience a noticeable slow-down in access to video material towards the end of my billing cycle; and that is indeed what occurred.

If you do go with the V740, I would recommend you also purchase its compatible external antenna for use in iffy/slower connection areas.

I have the UM 175 with the same setup as Lorna.  No problems.  I believe it is a newer version of the one I broke which I believe was the UM150.
