Slide Outs - When?

We would seriously consider buying a Lazy Daze but continue to hope that they will introduce slide-outs on their models. They are lacking far behind the industry. Even truck campers have slide-outs.  Does anyone know if this is a consideration?  We remember years ago when we happened to be staying near a Class A Foretravel dealer and, with no intention of buying, we went to have a look. We asked why Class A's now have slide-outs but Foretravel doesn't. The salesperson said smugly "because we're different and slide-outs cause problems".  Foretravel now offers slide-outs. We've had RVs with slide-out for 14 years without any problems.  Thanks.

Dear gypsies,

LD don't need "no stinking" slides.
Unless you are committed dreamers, your time might be better spent looking at all the other RV's, rather than waiting on LD to come out with a slide.

--- Perhaps you might express your thoughts to Lazy Daze? They apparently don't consider that not including a slide on their Ford E-450 chassis-based products to be a sign of lagging behind the industry; slides *do* have "issues", they're heavy, and they reduce the available CCC of the chassis.
I can only speak for myself, but *if* I were interested in a motorhome with a slide, I'd remove Lazy Daze from my short list and buy a product from a different manufacturer before I got too old to drive! YMMV.

Dear Gypsies,
There's much in the archives on this, as we've gone round and round regarding slides in the past.
Many of us, including me, would not purchase a motorhome with slides. I appreciate a floor plan that is optimized for no slides, that way when I stop for a short while, inside the motorhome everything is normal.
I have a friend with a Big Foot (now gone bankrupt) that has a slide. When the slide is in, the layout is clumsy. With the slide out, there's more space in front of the couch, but it adds nothing to the livability but "space". You really can't use that space for anything but to look at, or to fold out the couch into what makes a rather uncomfortable bed. No thanks.

all the best,

Gypsies,

A slide weighs about 500 lbs that come out of your rig's carrying capacity.  Slides weaken the wall structurally.  The number 1 service call on RV repair is for slides.  You want a less capable more troublesome rig?

It's better to think about making the space you have multi-purpose.

Since we owned a non-slide 1997 Foretravel for 3+ years, and was on the Foretravel Yahoo group, I can certainly attest to the fact that even Foretravel/HWH slides have problems from time to time.
Our Foretravel was one inch wider inside than our 2003 MB. The design was better than LDs in using that one inch. Front entry added space, too, since it enables a great deal of flexibility in the floor plan.
We full-timed in it for over three years. Even though "just" 36ft long it was very adequate for our needs, and we had a LOT of "stuff" in it.
Keep in mind a 36ft Foretravel might be just 9 feet longer than a MB but almost ALL of the 36 ft is useful living floor space.

I started a thread on the Foretravel Group asking just exactly what the advantage of slides is. Other than sight lines being longer, about the only advantage the Foretravel group came up with was slides were more convenient when you had company. I added that slides would also be helpful for those who gave dancing lessons...

I must admit slides are tempting, but I can give no logical reason why, and would never get an RV with slides.

Especially considering the bargain non-slide Foretravels are....

Of course, YMMV

best, paul

Hi, Gypsies.  As you have probably gathered from the other responses, the issue of slide-outs on a LD has been much discussed here.  The general sentiment that I have gathered is that they are not highly desired among the members of this group.
On a personal note, some time after I picked up my new 2008 MB, I received a questionnaire from the mothership.  They were asking about my experience with my unit.  The questions covered a fairly wide area such as initial orientation and pick-up, controllability, systems, etc.  Pertinent to this discussion is that one of the areas of questions was about slide-outs.  They asked if I would have preferred having a slide-out with a consequent loss of cargo carrying capacity.
They asked if the added room of a slide out was important to me.  My answer to both questions was "no".
I have an awning.  I have put it out twice in the past year.
We all have different needs and wishes.  The point of my post is that Lazy Daze seems to be making an effort to learn of their buyers' wishes (as distinct from the RV mass market).  They then seem to provide the best coach they can for those who want a Lazy Daze.

I've never understood this question on the Lazy Daze questionnaire...it's sorta like locking the barn door after the horses have escaped!
Obviously, since the person has already purchased a Lazy Daze, slides weren't important to them, otherwise, they wouldn't have made the purchase!

We're a quirky group that likes it that way.
I voted for no slides either.
Glad you had no problems with slides for 14 years, but I have witnessed leaks, slide won't go out/in, not being able to use a spot because of objects in the way, cats being caught in the slide out, just too much trouble . imho! Suggest you look at another brand instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.

Slides??? If it Ain't broke, Don't fix it!
For over 50 years, Lazy Daze has earned a fantastic reputation based on quality and practicality! That's why those of us who own one are OK with being called a cult when it comes to our Lazy Daze RV's!
We don't just like our LD's... We L O V E them. There isn't a week that goes by that I am not amazed at some feature of my Mid-Bath LD. The design is so well thought out that there is no need to drastically change it. I am proud that my unit, albeit a 1994, and it looks that same as the newer units with the exception of the Ford cab and grill.
I have yet to find a single person who doesn't LOVE their Lazy Daze unit, not a single one. And when you call the factory for a part, they are unbelievably friendly and reasonably priced. Not so with other manufacturers in the RV industry. It's really like dealing with a Family! Same owners for 53 years should tell you something!
It takes years to build the reputation that Lazy Daze has built. Why change a great thing?  The day you're in your new RV with a slide and you stop at a rest stop for lunch, power out the slide and then discover it's STUCK in the out position... Think about what you missed by not purchasing a Quality made Lazy Daze!
If you still really want a slide, look at those RV Mfr's that make them, but if you want a care free well thought out design in the Best Class C ever made, Check into a Lazy Daze!

It's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

I'm a newbie here as this is my first post.  However, I'm not a newbie to RV'ing as I've been doing it since 1974.  In another year or so I'm looking to upgrade from 21' to a 27'.  LD has the most sensible floor plans and unlike other mfg, have not complicated them with 'slides'.  I've witnessed too many leaks and failures to retract, to make me comfortable.  And then there's the added weight.
Nope, I hope LD stays true to its past, at least until I'm able to get one. :)))))
