It looks like our back window pull down shade may be living on borrowed time. Does anyone currently have the new shades that close from the sides to the center? If so what is the opinion. Are they good quality, are they as effective at keeping the temperatures out as the pull down shade, etc?

Thanks Jerri

"Wild Thing", our 2006 MB, came equipped with the usual pull down shade...while it wasn't on borrowed time, it was on my nerves...so this past February when we made landfall at The Mothership, the side-to-side rear shade was on the Vince-do list.
We like it very much. It is a bit delicate, but well installed and we have had no "issues." We have found that since "WT" was resting at her summer home and we kept the rear shade closed (as in pulled across the window), it has been a bit fussy on the folding back, but simple care and patience...not troublesome...in restoring the shade to open is called for. My opinion is this factory-installed shade is not as sturdy as the original pull-down LD shade.
It should be noted that we were told that the shade is not meant to be used for solar gain abatement (my words)...that is, it's a nighttime shade. It's paper and will rot...as all paper shades will...in time. That being noted we used a piece of Reflectix between the window and the shade during the time "WT" was on her own. We will continue to do this as necessary, including when we are in colder climates during the winters.
Would we make this upgrade again? Yes. We are two seniors with no pets and no kids on board...make your own decisions accordingly.

Leave the blinds up or off.  Lot more fun that way.

You didn't mention what the problem is, Bob, but in the past six months, three out of four of my 2003 Lazy Daze's accordion blinds (made by Irvine Shade & Door) have failed due to unraveling of the cords. In each case the cord's outer wrap has come off, leaving the inner core intact, but causing the shade to jam.
The shades aren't particularly hard to disassemble: once you have them down from the windows, just pry off the plastic end caps, and the top and bottom rails can be slid off. With my rear blind, which failed first, I was able to strip back the frayed outer wrap of the affected cord (each blind has four cords) and use just the inner core. Somewhat to my surprise, it has worked for four months now.
With my streetside rear blind, I replaced the failed cord with a length of braided polyester cord that I purchased in Walmart's crafts and sewing department (for 37 cents a foot, as I  recall). So far, that's working fine. The curbside blind still needs to be repaired. It's a nuisance, but doable.
I'm not trying to talk you out of buying a new-style rear blind if you'd prefer one... just wanted to let you know that if you're having cord problems similar to mine, they are repairable with a little effort. :-)

Thanks everyone for your advise. Norm took the blind apart and ran a new string through the blind. He says it was way easier and much less expensive than purchasing a new blind. The rest of the blind is in pretty good shape. As Andy stated in his recent post, the outer coating of the string separated.
