Finding DirecTV Satellite from Canada
Yahoo Message Number: 105598
When we are on the road in the US I put the local ZIP code into the receiver and am able to get proper AZ/EL numbers to locate the DirecTV 101 Satellite.
How do I find the AZ/EL numbers when I am in British Columbia and Alberta? They use six letter/number combinations instead of a five number ZIP Code.
Thanks, Nate Walker

This is what we did the last time we went to Canada (we were Dish Network customers at the time, but it should work for DirecTV, too):

Find a U.S. city as close to due south of your Canadian location as possible.  Look up the Zip Code for that city and plug it into your DirecTV's receiver's menu.
That will give you the Azimuth...the Elevation will be lower, so you'll just have to play around with it.
Our DirecTV receiver asks for GPS coordinates, not Zip Code.  I've never found a place where I can change it to Zip Code, but perhaps that depends on the receiver model.  I don't know whether or not it would give us Azimuth and Elevation for a GPS coordinate that was located in Canada, though.

You can also go on Direct TVs website and click on "equipment" and then on "satellite" and it will have you put in a zip code and then give you the azimuth and elevation.  This is the way we do it when our received won't go to regular setup.
Have never been to Canada, but this should work everywhere Direct TV works.

But it won't accept a Canadian Zip Code...that's the OP's problem.

We just returned from Alaska via BC, Alberta, and Yukon.  We have DirectTV and used latitude and longitude to find the 101 satellite.  It should be in your satellite set-up.  FYI, once you get deeper into the interior on Canada, the signal is more difficult to find since your dish is almost pointed to the ground.  So take lots of DVDs.  We found Canada so beautiful that we didn't spend much time inside anyway.

Have a great holiday.
