Regarding having to be online to use gmail, if you install google gears and enable offline in your settings you can access your email offline.
The same is true of other google documents once gears is installed and offline activated. Google then keeps copies on your harddrive. I find this particularly useful for times when I'm without internet access.

The downside is you need to be able to access the Internet to use the resource you've created (This is not a downside for me as I ALWAYS need to have access to the Internet).
 One upside is you can access it from any computer in the world. Not to mention that those times you do not have access to the Internet Gmail has faithfully saved every message posted to the LD Group for you.

Right.  I keep threatening to download emails.

Two questions:

1. Can Gears put copies of my email on two different computers?
2. Does Google implement a fast search of emails while offline?

Paul,

If you set your GMail account up as an IMAP account rather than POP and have an email program on your computers that works with IMAP the mail will update each computer every time you open the mail if you have an internet connection at the time.
 If you have a Macintosh this works really well with Mail.  I use both a laptop and a desktop and both have the mail synchronized all the time without any effort on my part.  Mail previously downloaded is always available on both computers and anything I haven't deleted more than 30 days ago is always available online by using any browser.
