Another Generator Question
Yahoo Message Number: 104311
Some may remember that quite a while back I had the Onan Generator on my 92 MB removed for testing as the tech could not figure out why it would not stay running consistently.  He ended up telling me he couldn't figure it out after endless hours at it and swapping out various parts.  He never charged me for the parts or work.
I ended up getting a really good deal on a used and new Honda EU2000 with the RV pack which allows you to duplex them and get 4000 watts.  They have worked pretty well as a replacement solution.  They are quiet, more fuel efficient, etc. The only hassle is storing them in the shower, fueling them and carrying them in and out of the unit.
The tech called the other day saying he finally figured out the issue.  It was the voltage regulator.  He says it runs like a champ now and has a full tune up, new carbuerator, brush set, etc.  He's wondering if I want the Onan reinstalled and says he'll work up a very favorable price.
I'm leaning towards getting it done as I figure the LD will be worth more if I ever sell with a good generator on board. This of course depends on the price.  So, any opinions on what would be fair to essentially buy back my generator?  I'm thinking paying for the parts, the labor to reinstall it and a few hours for his troubleshooting time.
When he "gave up" he told me he'd keep fiddling with it but there was no expectation I owed him anything.  He also was sure at the time it was not the voltage regulator which I had asked about :-)

Oh!  I am having the same problem...could you ask the tech where the voltage regulator is?

Cheers, Helen (otherwise the a/c would be run off the generator)....

Chalk me up in the count of parking brake rebuild victims.  I have a strange feeling it's not whether or not the brake assembly will fail, but when. Definetly not one of Ford's "better ideas".  By the way, I'm one of those folks who (almost) never uses the parking brake and never drove with it on.

I certainly would have it reinstalled, if I were in your shoes. In addition to making a significant difference in the rig's resale price, it'll spare you the hassle of schlepping that big hulking Honda generator in and out, storing gas cans, etc.... and nobody's going to steal your Onan generator, which happens to portable generators on a regular basis. I'm sure you won't have any trouble selling the EU2000i to some trailerite who doesn't have a built-in genset.

Well I'm not a 'parking brake victim' yet, anyway.  You see, you folks with LDs have a definite advantage over those of us who contribute to the group from time to time who drive SOB!  One of the exciting things about a SOB w/slide, is that the E-Brake must be applied prior to opening the slide! Have I ever driven off with the E-Brake still applied?  Yes, but fortunately, so far, not for any great distance.  While the E-Brake is certainly not very effective (thank God for 'Park'), it does create sufficient drag that you soon notice the little red light in the dash and pull the lever.  Yes, I know that there is a tip in the files on how to install a Radio Shack buzzer, but I haven't done so yet.  Too bad that it doesn't come standard!

Hate being the bearer of bad news Rich, but I think you're going to find your 2000 model year e-brake has no serviceable parts. I.e. it can't be rebuilt; only replaced as an entire unit.
That was the story I got from my local Ford Authorized Warranty garage a few years back when I ruined the e-brake on my 2000 MB.
Newer model years can be rebuilt but not the older ones. Or so I'm told.
Don't worry. It's nothing $1,500 or so wont fix. After the replacement, invest $20 to install the buzzer warning system Terry Tanner shows on his LD website. I suppose I should have done that *before* I burned up the brake. Slow learner.

My local Ford dealer gave me a choice...rebuild it or for $300 more replace the entire unit.  I chose to have it rebuilt.  Either way, it's an expensive proposition.  The buzzer wouldn't have helped a bit, as I stated in my earlier post, I (almost) never use the darn thing and never drove off with it on.  They fail anyway!
