I think that the buildings of Balboa Park, built for an Exposition in the early 20th Century in the Spanish Colonial style are gorgeous! Many are now museums to serve a variety of interests: aerospace, natural history, science, a wonderful wooden botanical garden; the Spanish village with its craftsmen; the Japanese Garden, the Old Globe theater, the fine arts museum, Spreckels ampitheater.  I could easily spend a day here, strolling about and going in to museums that interest me.  It¹s within walking distance from the parking lot for the zoo.  An attraction not to be missed, in my mind and seldom overcrowded.

If you enjoy Irish pubs, be sure to visit 'The Field', in the gaslamp district.  Fantastic food, interior shipped over from Ireland, Irish waitpersons, and of course Guinness, Harps on tap!

my two cents
I had a friend from Hong Kong come here.  I took her to zoo, downtown, etc.  many places listed here.  Then for some reason I ended up taking her to Norstroms Rack in Mission Valley where she spent the whole day and bought about 20 pairs of shoes and she said that was the best place she had been to.
Another thing she was surprised about were the rocks in the mountains off of I-8 as you go over the top to the desert.  I have a hunch these might be unique.

There are other locations that have beautiful rocks like these (for example, Baja California and going South on CA-247 into Yucca Valley).
We marvel at them every time we drive to San Diego from El Centro, especially their warm color. What I've often wanted is a geologist's description of how they were formed.

best, paul

The granite naturally cracks along the "joint" lines creating huge blocks, then the water and wind find the most vulnerable point, the edges to work on. Over time the blocks become very rounded. I assume you meant the big round boulders. Another fabulous place to look at them is Joshua Tree and the Alabama mountains outside of Lone Pine on 395. The view with Mount Whitney in back is famous from early cowboy and indian movies.
