Has anyone taken highway 266 from highway 95 in NV to Big Pine/Bishop in CA?  Any recommendations?

I've driven over most of 168 and some parts of 266 in our Jeep.  This is a very remote high desert road.  Unless you desire to see it, I'd probably recommend taking US 6 from 95 down to Bishop.  168 has one short section of 1 lane road with a blind curve.

Yes, while on a camping trip many years ago we (wife, 6 kids, plus mother-in-law) pulled a white knuckle overnighter there in a VW Van.
There seemed to be MANY 'critters' on the road that I kept running over (ground squirrels?). Running on white gas we pulled into Big Pine at daybreak to wait for the gas station to open.

My family will never let me forget it :o)
But I've taken our 2003 Lazy Daze and 1997 Foretravel over Sonora Pass (15% grade if I recall aright) so I assume a Lazy Daze would be able to make it to Big Pine even without the aid of white gas :o)

best, paul
PS> "White knuckles" caused by concern about running out of gas -- but I made it against the predictions of my family! :o)  I don't think this was the same trip where my fuel was so low I had to back up a hill...

There are two passes; the higher one is about 7300', the lower, about 6400'.  While the passes are not particularly high, the 37-mile long (from 266 to 395) 168 is a fairly narrow road with many curves, some pretty sharp, and ups and downs; the grades range from 6% to 9%.  The lengths of the grades vary quite a bit. One can certainly drive this road in a "large" RV, but it can be  somewhat "challenging" if one is towing and/or isn't accustomed to/practiced in mountain driving techniques. YMMV.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. A big help.  I'm not looking for a challenge or excitement! Just a different way to get to Bishop other than usual I-40 and 395 from AZ. And not through Death Valley this time of the year.

Many years ago, but recall it was quite a scenic drive - only recommendation, make sure you have ample fuel!
