Re Honda Fit Weakness

I just stopped by our local Honda dealer, and he agreed that the AC condenser on the Fit could be hit by a rock - - showed me that it's the same issue on the Lexus. Anyhow, he said that putting any sort of screen guard in front of it c/would decrease the air flow and cause over heating, which could lead to failure. In that case, the screen guard would void the warranty related to overheatig. So the solution? I don't know. I'm going to check out various rock guards - - either the solid kind that is under the back of the Lazy Daze, or see if the kind that fits on the front of the Honda would protect that area. I doubt it. Neither, of course, would protect the AC condenser just driving down the road.
He said that he has seen it happen, but only once in his years in the business.
I am going to get the Mylar or 3M for the lights. We had the 3M stuff put on the front of the LD several years ago, and it has certainly done its job, including some might rocky roads in Alaska a couple of years ago. No regrets there.

I suspect that you are going to get a response like that from some Honda dealers since they are protecting themselves avoiding installation of ANYTHING on the car that is not OEM and will not admit that the vehicle may have a design problem. I seriously doubt that the approximately 1/4" open mesh will impede enough air flow to impact cooling but it will slow rocks down.
On the other hand, I just got an email from another LD owner who indicated that thier Honda dealer agreed that it is a problem and installed the piece of Home Depot gutter screening for them.
Personally, I'll use the guard!

The physics would indicate that only a fairly massy rock would be likely to puncture the tubing, so a guard that would protect against that size would prevent failure and not interfere with airflow enough to be a risk factor. I would see what off-road firms have to offer and install something - Honda can only successfully fight a claim in court if they can prove their case. That in turn will keep the settlement OUT of court.
