Air Bags

I recently purchased my 1996 LD30 and am getting front end work done on it.  I am getting an alignment, new upper control arm bushings, sway bar bushings,  and new tires.  I decided to stick  with the Goodyear G670 tires.
I got a call from the shop doing the work and the mechanic states that there are air bags inside the front coil springs.    They don't have air in them now and he wanted to replace them.  I was not aware of the bags and feel that they are probably unnecessary.  I have put 3000 miles on the rig since purchase and am comfortable with ride and control.  The rig is slightly nose down, but I don't believe that it is a problem.    The bags may have been added in an attempt to level the rig out.
Can anyone answer whether the LD came with them, or are they an aftermarket addition? Most important, can I keep them in place (without air in them) and drive safely?

This LD30 is on a 1995 Chevy P34 chassis.

Ed,
We have the same '96 30IB on a '95 P/G 30 chassis. Ours also has the tendency to be in a nose down attitude. We think it is just inheranent in that chassis.
As we are the 2nd owners ours had the airbags when we got it and  we actually replaced them. We notice  a difference and continue to be sure  to keep them inflated properly. I personally don't think it effects the "safety" of driving with them not inflated,  but doing that could damage them  per my mechanic .

I think all of the chevy P30 series chassis are factory equipped with airbags. I have owned two RV's based on the P30 and both had airbags,

Thank you for your response on airbags.  Since the bags are probably already shot and needing replacement, I went ahead and aligned the front end without messing with the bags.  Everything seems to be OK with the ride without the bags so right or wrong thats what I did.
We will see how things progress.  If it seems like I should have the bags, I will need to realign again with them inflated.
Again, Thanks for your response.

P-30s came with air bags, G-30s did not.
I tried air bags in the front of our nose-heavy 1983 G-30 LD.
The bags did not last two years before blowing out. I replaced one and it was almost impossible to get the old one out without removing the coil spring. I gave up on the front, in the coil, air bags.
To fix to low-nose problem, I bought new, heavy-duty springs from Coil Springs Specialties. The coils were taller and stiffer than the largest available Factory coils.
They also sell springs for the P-30.

Larry Thanks for this link to Coil Springs Specialties.. sounds like this is the way to go.  I will look into replacing the coils and realigning when I get home.. about 2 weeks.
