For those that have one or those that wish they did...I was wondering if you thought the following sounded worthwhile.
I may have an opportunity to purchase a used Gear Vendor Overdrive for ~$800 that was installed on an '86 F250 with C6 transmission.  This is the same drivetrain as my '88MB, so from what I know of these it would be a direct fit add-on, with me needing to have my driveline shortened and not much else.
We are a young family, don't use our LD a lot, so I know from a mileage standpoint it will take a loooong time for payback, but I also like the idea of adding OD to my C6, especially for all the hills out in the Pacific NW where we now live.

thanks, Adam

Adam,

I have one on my '91 MB and absolutely love having it.  Especially when we lived in Colorado.  That being said, I would not buy it for the sake of better gas mileage, but for performance reasons.  Like you said, it would take many many miles to recoup the cost.
If your travels take you over mountainous areas frequently, then it's probably not a bad idea to have it.  It will take strain off your engine and transmission and you will be able to go over mountains at a decent speed.

Hope that helps,

-Victor (now in relatively flat MN)

The real question is how much your *installed* cost will be. In other words, $800 plus how much in labor? Gear Vendors' website shows the installation cost as $900, so your total cost may end up being more than double the purchase price.
Mind, I'm not saying anything against the Gear Vendors system. On the contrary, everybody I know who has it likes it. Whether you want to invest nearly $2,000 in a 23-year-old rig that you don't use a lot, in order to get a modest performance boost... that's up to you.
