Ok, final word on the RAV4 tpms. I found a Toyota document, for any who are interested:

There are pressure sensors at each valve stem, which means pressure is NOT inferred from rotational speed. There are also speed sensors on the vehicle, but it is unclear what their function is in this system.

Excellent detective work, Steve.  The only RAV4 info I could find refered to a dual sensor system but no details.  Jack

 VERY interesting! So they *do* run on batteries--I wondered about that. (Thought maybe they were using batteryless RFID technology.) Good for ten years, though, which is pretty decent.
