digital tv June 01, 2009, 08:21:50 am Yahoo Message Number: 102804with the digital transition coming this month,I am undecided as to buy a ac tv and use an inverter, or buy an ac/dc tv like I have now. there is not much choice with ac/dc tv's and I'm not sure the quality is as good as some of the name brand ac only tvs. does the inverter use a lot of power itself? does anyone have any input on this?

Joe, you can always use one of these converters like the one below and keep your old TV. They do work well and with Gov't coupon it will cost you less the $10.00 freight. http://www.artec.com.tw/ehtm/products/t3appro.htm I believe LD is now using the Jensen JE 1909 RTL for the DC tv in all except with entertainment package. It is a 50W model and has a dc power source of 9-30V. You would need some sort of mounting arm. Price from Jensen $399.00 selivered Joe Hamm-San Jose

Modified-sine-wave inverters for THIS purpose are about 90% efficient. The biggest factor is that often TVs designed for 12V have a more power-efficient design - fewer unnecessary power-consuming conveniences, and less or no power drawn when 'off'. However, modern designs have come a long way, and this is almost a moot point anymore. Besides, 'off' power can be eliminated by turning the inverter off. I would be more concerned with performance quality, reliability, ease of service, warranty support, and how it will fit in your mounting location. Make sure you have full return privileges on both TV and inverter in case there is some specific incompatibility.Steve

Last year I installed a 15" digital Audiovox TV, model FPE1507DV, which runs on either AC or DC. Now I watch DVDs and (occasionally) TV on a 24" iMac that's 18" from my comfortable desk chair. I thought I'd miss the 53" set... but it turns out that the picture is actually larger and sharper with my iMac setup, and I find the "home theater" experience even more enjoyable now.Moral: it all depends on where you sit. :-)Andy Baird http://www.andybaird.com/travels/

Jensen RV Direct.com has a limited number of "remanufactured" 15" 12VDC sets available for $149 with free shipping. This unit should fit in the opening of the cabinet that LD used for the 13" RCA crt tvs. One thing to consider is that this set comes with only a 30 day warranty. I was looking for something like this because we wanted a tv that would mount in the existing opening instead of in front of the cabinet. I will mount it on a swing out arm so we can extend the tv for viewing from other angles and be able to retract. I was considering a new one for $369 but..... hey, I have a hard time passing up what I think is a bargain!;-) Model is the JE1507DC but if you want a larger unit, they have "deals" on the larger 19" tvs too.FWIW, here is the good and the bad:The bad: 1. Screen size is the old 4:3 proportion. Not a big deal to us. 2. TV ships without a 12VDC plug; power cord has + and - marked. Issue solved at Radio Shack for under $10. 3. 30 day warranty.Good. 1. TV fits very well in the opening. An exact fit width wise but some room left top and bottom which is good for pulling out the TV. 2. TV looks brand new and has a great picture. 3. TV runs on 12 volts and uses only 35 watts. 4. TV is designed and manufactured for RV and marine use.[ This is the brand (but not model) that LD now installs.] 5. Ordered Wed. morning and received Thursday afternoon! (Is that good service or what?!!)I have no idea how many of these sets Jensen RV Direct has available. If you have been looking for a replacement for that old RCA 12 volt tv, in my opinion, this one is worth consideration.Steve K. (I have no vested interest in Jensen or Jensen RV direct.)

I ordered the Jensen 19 HDTV online and installed a quick disconnect plug to keep it from drawing current when it is off in the standby mode. When I did my research I found that the 12 volt tv draws less current amps than the a 110 AC TV. If you were not hooked up and you wanted to use an inverter to run the AC TV you would draw more current with that arrangement than you would if you used a 12 volt tv directly.Jakester 93'RB
