Michelin XPS RIB - None Until July
Yahoo Message Number: 102600
I spoke to Michelin today and, since the XPS RIB will not be available until July, the agent tried to switch me into the LTX M/S. It has "Three-Steel-Belt Durability" as opposed to the RIB's "Steel-Casing Strength". Is this tire a worthy substitute?
I spoke to Goodyear who said that the G149 RSA has been replaced with the G949 RSA. No idea regarding availability. Does anyone know anything about this tire?

Is there an SOB tire that is a worthy substitute? Kumho?
My plan now is to buy two for the front, with an alignment (tire people who can hoist an LD are a rarity in New England), in Massachusetts (and suffer the state sales tax), then replace the dual four in NH where there is no sales tax.

Thoughts?

I have been satisfied with LTX for some years.  When I asked my tire friend whether I should use all-steel XPS, his advice was "the only reason to use all-steel is if you're planning to recap them."  I hypothesize that's what qualifies those as "commercial".

I put on six  LTX A/S tires when I bought my LD in early 2005 and I've been happy with them. For the first 12 months, the LD was my daily driver in all sorts of New England weather. IIRC, they also offer "Three-Steel-Belt Durability."

I have the LTX A/Ss and am very pleased with them.  You may recall my vibration problems several yrs ago with XPS ribs.  Discount Tire put two different sets on my '02 30' before I discarded that idea because of persistent vibrations with both sets and went to the LTXs. Other folks have had no problems with XPSs.  The common complaint is a harsher ride with XPSs.

WOW! Thanks for the responses.  It looks as though I need to check out the availability of the LTX in my neighborhood.

Thanks again, Paul

More bad news. Michelin says the LTX A/S has been discontinued and are recommending the LTX M/S, a "less aggressive tire".
I would appreciate any thoughts as to the efficacy of this tire on my LD. Is anyone using it?

Thanks, Paul

The LTX M/S is what came standard on our 2004 MB and many others.  It has worked just fine for us and it is what I plan to put on it when I replace the existing tires.  We do drive in snow and the tire performs very well on snow covered roads as well as on dry pavement.  As far as I can tell, Michelin doesn't recommend it for motorhomes because they believe that many of them are overloaded.  If you keep within the GVWR I think they are a very good tire for LD use.  Of course that is just my opinion.

Paul,
I think you have a 2004 rig and ...Uh..... don't know how to break this to you, but those tires you are asking about..... well..... I think you've probably been driving on them for the last 50,000+ miles.
Those became the tire Ford was installing on the E450 chassis starting with the 2003 model year. I replaced my original set with the same tires; they have been great. But then again, you probably already knew that!;-)

Ah, Steve, you're a gentleman, as is Monti. Do I have egg on my face? Oh, yeah! I went to my rig this morning and, to my chagrin, read LTX M/S! Clueless!

Going to have six mounted tomorrow and aligned on Monday.

Thanks to all who helped!
