It would  be interesting to know if Caliciah uses a filter when she fills the  fresh water tank.
We didn't know such a filter existed?  this is a major  issue for us as we travel with bottled water always. Where would one find such a  filter? I assume it would go on your  hose?  Would Camping World be  the place to check or can you use something more readily available to  purchase?

 There's a variety of filters and indeed Camping World as well as other RV supply places including Walmart carry them.  Some get fancy and are a virtual water purification system.  A basic hose attached filter can remove sediment and some minerals and gases like chlorine.  Read up on their specs. For other than full-timers, they're good for about  year.

 Unless you also shower and wash your hands, faces, and dishes with bottled water, you had better be filtering what goes into your tank or your city water inlet! ANY water that enters your rig needs to be filtered against bacteria and cysts, as well as chemical contaminants.

 Walk into any Walmart. Go to the automotive department near the rear of the store. Look for the RVing supplies section. Purchase a pair of blue Camco disposable cartridge filters. (You need two so that when one begins to clog, you can switch to the spare.)
 The spare can be stored anywhere, but the filter you're using should be kept in the refrigerator. That'll prevent algae growth that would clog it prematurely. Filters will last a LOT longer if you do this, and you'll save money.
 If you want to get a fancier filter system from an RVing store or www.rvwaterfilterstore.com later on, fine. But go to a Walmart NOW and get a basic blue Camco filter, and start filtering your water today!

We like this set up, as it's inexpensive and there isn't as much waste (ecologically) as with the disposable blue filters.

By combining this outside filter with a Nature Pure inside at the kitchen sink, we no longer have to carry bottled water.  We've been in places where others say the water tastes bad, but since we've been using this combination, we haven't had any problem.  Also, we no longer have to carry expensive bottled water, nor do we have to deal with all the leftover plastic bottles.

In a post yesterday I recommended getting blue Camco water filters from Walmart as a quick solution to water purification (although as Kate points out, there are more sophisticated ways if you're willing to spend more money).
 Jeanne Gaffney mentioned in a private email that Walmart's website doesn't show the Camco filters, so I want to reassure you that they are sold in the stores. My experience has been that Walmart's website is all but useless, because many of the items they regularly carry in their stores are not shown on the website--don't ask me why. Trust me, those filters (and other RVing items) are in 98% of the Walmart stores I've been to. :-)

By the way, one useful gadget I've seen recently in the RVing section of some Walmart stores--right near the Camco water filters--is the Intellitec digital water quality meter. This little $15 gadget, which looks like a fat blue and white marker pen, will give you a quick reading of total dissolved solids--water hardness, in other words--when dipped in water. More than 500 part per million is too much, according to the EPA--and I've seen higher levels at many campgrounds here in the Southwest.
 There's no guarantee that every store will have this, because it's a new item for walmart... but it's worth looking for next time you're in a Walmart. :-)

 I'm not sure what the point of measuring the water hardness would be.  A filter would not remove dissolved solids, so unless you want to carry a portable water softener, what could you do except maybe move on to another part of the country.  Or is there some simple treatment for water hardness that I don't know about?

True. No cartridge filter can do that.

 Well, you have a good point, Barry. I guess I just like to know, and for $15, I can afford to satisfy my curiosity. But you're right: I don't do much with the information except shake my head and go "My, my..." ;-)
