HD TV antenna set up
Yahoo Message Number: 100054
Hi all,
Am getting ready to install my tv.  Would like to receive HD broadcasts but have been told by my Direct TV tech that the antenna is very difficult to align by hand  on the appropriate sats.  As I am not real excited about one of the $1500 automatic units I am wondering if anyone has manually used the much less expensive version that they install at the home.  I understand that it is a specific antenna meant for the HD sats.  Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks and aloha, Skip

We use the factory installed batwing with our converter box.  It hasn't been a real problem tuning the batwing.
As to manually tuning for the satellite, again, not really a problem.

We've found manual tuning pretty easy for both, and are glad we didn't spring for the extra $.

While we don't have HD programming, so don't have to fool around with a multi-LNB dish, there are lots of people out there who are using these dishes on a tripod, so getting the satellites sited in can't be too bad.
Since the dish that you'll need for DirecTV HD programming is quite a bit larger than the normal 18" single-LNB dish, you'll need a sturdy tripod and an offset bracket wouldn't be a bad idea.  Maxwell Satellite sells either the complete kit, including the DirecTV Slimline antenna, or if you already have the Slimline antenna, they sell the rest of the equipment you'll need:

Skip, I just had Directv installed in our home yesterday and just tested one receiver in the LD yesterday and in another location today using my manually operated, factory installed sat. dish.  It was very easy to find the bird once I had the correct elevation and azimuth.  In fact, with Directv it is easier to find the satellite than with Dish TV which I used to have.

That's really amazing to me.  I watched the DirecTV technician as he aimed our new Slimline dish trying to get all three satellites at their maximum.
The dish was mounted on a pole in our backyard, so I could stand right there and watch everything he was doing.  A half-turn here.  A little tweak there.
I just don't see how that would be possible on a motorhome, but I guess it is.  It was nothing at all like aiming the old round dish.

Dick, the key is getting the elevation pretty close and then pointing the dish antenna in the general direction called for, let's say 164, and then using little turns back and forth while watching the TV screen on which is the signal finder which gets louder as you more closely align to the satellite.  Interestingly, after you use a roof-mounted sat. antenna for a while, you kind of know where to point it for the bird and sometimes don't even have to look up the azimuth and elevation.  Sometimes, I say.  And I am only searching for one satellite at 101 degrees W. longitude.

However, Skip said he was interested in HD programming which requires a multi-LNB dish...the single LNB dish on that LD installs is only good for SD programming, not HD.  Oh, I suppose you could change the dish to tune in the new satellite each time you wanted to change channels, but that would get old real quickly!
There are automatic, roof-mounted dishes from both Winegard and Motosat that have multiple LNBs that are skewable especially for DirecTV and Dish Network.  Unfortunately, the DirecTV HD dish can't be used with Dish Network and vice versa, so you pretty much have to decide which service you're going to use and then stick with it because, as Skip mentioned, they're expensive.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question on HD antenna set up.
As Linda pointed out the dish needed for HD reception is different from the one needed for SD.  My question is regarding the dish that is intended to pickup transmissions from the ka/ku band satellites that Direct  uses for HD.
While I have set up the SD dishes before and would love to hear that the HD are that easy, I am a little unclear on which one some of you are referencing in your answers.
As I mentioned, I would love to have HD in my LD, but I don't want to spend half the day swearing at my wife because I can't get the dish aimed properly.  Thanks again for all your responses, this is an awesome group!

One thing that would make it much easier is to get an Align-A-Site to attach to your dish.  http://www.alignasite.com/

Agreed! Anybody with a satellite internet system such as HughesNet already knows how to do three-axis aiming (altitude/azimuth/skew)--we do it every time we set up. The Align-A-Site helps tremendously.

Skip, other than Linda's explanation about HD, I believe our answers to your ease-of-alignment question had to do with SD dishes aimed at only one satellite.
