We're looking for ideas of things to do with family, 20 yr old something kids and spouses, in the Boise ID and Sawtooth Mountains area of Idaho.  River rafting, ballooning, hiking, fishing, those kinds of outdoor things.   Thanks.

Can't say much about Boise, except for the noisy night I spent in an RV Park just a wall's thickness away from a busy Interstate.
But, take a run down to Mountain Home and pick up Hwy #20. It will lead you to Craters of the Moon Nat. Monument. And beyond is the town of Arco, noted as the 1st town in the U.S. to be powered by Atomic Energy. Just beyond Arco you will find EBR-1 (Experimental Breeder Reactor #1). If you have never stood above and looked down into an atomic reactor core you've got a thrill coming.

Head north of Boise toward Cascade, ID.  You will find rafting, canoes, fishing on the Payette River.  There's a train, plenty of camping.
Have fun!

Not that we southern Californians are experts, but we love Idaho. Traced along the Snake for most of its length, prowled through the wheat and potato growing regions, did Ketcham-Sun Valley et al. and really scoured the North, Coeur d'Alene, Sandpoint, Pond Oreille, etc. The lake is a marvel, was a huge Navy training base during WWII, and a great spot for boating and fishing. We found Boise itself a real treat. Surprisingly cosmopolitan and urban, clean, and full of amenities of all kinds. Can't testify to outdoorsy activities, but can't imagine they aren't first class and bountiful. Our compaass always points north

Lake Pend Oreille was not just a Naval training center, it was the Navy's submarine training center, which gives you an idea of the depth of the lake.
About 1,150 feet

--- The Sawtooth NRA, like many places in Idaho, is a great location; this reference might help you plan some sights to see and activities to do:

Highway 21 out of Boise is a scenic route; when you get to Stanley, you can head north on 75 towards Salmon, or south on 75 to Redfish Lake and Ketchum/Sun Valley, etc.  There are many camping and hiking opportunities along these routes.  Stanley has quite a few (they did a couple of years ago, anyway) river rafting companies and packages; check locally for river conditions and the best deals.
BTW, Benchmark maps offers an Idaho atlas.  No, I don't work for these folks; really!  ;-)

John & Cheryl,
If you travel about 60 miles south of Salmon, ID on route 28, there is a forest service campground called "Meadow Lake", about a dozen miles from Leadore, ID.  It is high

OK, so you are looking a the summer months of June, July and August.

These are great months to be in Boise.  Here are a few ideas.

1)  Hiking and mountain biking trails - Boise has a huge trail system in the surrounding foothills.  Must be well over 100 miles of trails all accessible within about 5 minutes from downtown area.  All the local bike shops will have trail maps and rent bikes.

2)  The Boise river flows through the heart of the city.  There is a paved walking/bike path along the river which is a great way to visit the area and check out the parks that are linked by the river.  The river also provides a great relaxing float via rafts or intertubes.  The float starts at Barber Park and ends at Ann Morrison Park.  That's about 5 miles or 3 hours on the water.  You can rent all the gear you need at Barber Park.

3)  If you want white water rafting head to Banks, ID about 30 miles from Boise or Stanley, ID (130 miles from Boise).  Stanley is at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains.  If you want bigger water, head for Banks if you want scenery, head for Stanley.

4)  Shakespeare Theater - This is an outdoor theater with plays almost everynight during the summer.  Bring your own picnic dinner and beverages or buy them at the theater.

5)  Fishing - you can fish on the Boise River, but in the heart of the summer you may hook a rafter.  You can also go to Lucky Peak Res. which is 9 miles from Boise.  This is a large lake with fishing, water skiing, etc.

6)  Downtown - the downtown area is a very energetic place to visit.  Lot's of outdoor eating and shopping.  On Saturday's there is a Farmer's Market in the center of town.  This is a very friendly outdoorsy town so go to lunch at one of the outdoor resturants and ask one of the locals what's happening during thetime you are in town and I'm sure they will be glad ot give you the latest scoop.

You also mentioned visiting the Sawtooth Mountains.  Good choice!!  Go to Redfish Lake (135 miles from Boise - 5 miles from Stanley).  Many campgrounds, but it is crowded during the summer.  From Redfish, you can go on a horseback ride, take a boat ride across the lake to take a hike up the mountain, or just hang out in camp and look up at one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the country.  Good fishing in the Salmon River which is no more than a couple of miles from Redfish.  Lot's of hiking opportunities in the area.
From Redfish, you will be 60 miles from Sun Valley (Ketchum) so you might as well go hangout with the beautiful people for a day or two.  Lot's of hiking, mountain biking, eating and movie star spotting opportunities.  Many campgrounds between Redfish and Sun Valley.
I hope this helps with planning your trip.  You can't help from having a good time!!
