Leaking fuel filler

We are traveling from Florida to San Antonio before returning to Wisconsin, and have developed a leak in the fuel filler.  Once I finish fueling and the dripping stops, there is no further leak, so I am pretty sure that the leaking is occurring at the filler pipe.  I have crawled under the LD (1995 MB) and there appears to be solid plastic of some type at the filler opening end, and coming from the top of the gas tank, with some type of flexible hose material between, attached with hose clamps. (It doesn't appear to be coming from the plastic parts, but I can't be sure.) I am wondering whether this is a LD part, or a Ford part?  It appears that I might even be able to do the job right here at the campground.  Has anyone had any experience with this, and any suggestions?  I will contact a Ford dealer in San Antonio tomorrow, but thought I would run it by you folks tonight.  Any help would be appreciated to get this potentially dangerous problem repaired.

Hi Bob, be sure and ask the Ford dealer if they work on motorhomes.  I have a hard time finding ones that will.  But they've always been able to recommend a nearby place that will (and usually for half the price).
Looks like there's quite a selection of Fords there. Here's some info that might be helpful (although I guess you have internet):

I've had excellent service with an RV shop

Bob, I had the same problem just one month ago.  The closest Ford Dealer that will work on RV's is in New Braunfels(25 Miles).  They said the gas tank would need to be dropped--quoted me $1200.  I called my RV service company--Texas RV Supply and talked with the service manager Tony and they did the job for $250 and didn't have to drop the tank.  I'm not where I can give you the phone number , but look them up--located on Austin Hwy.  Make sure you talk with Tony, nobody else.

Hope this works out for you.

Hi Bob,
We had a very similar (if not the same) problem with our 1983 22ft. RL.
While driving back from picking up our RV from its previous owner the left-inside tire blew separating the tread and whipping the heck out of the wheel well.
Inside the wheel well the gas vapor recovery line (small hose) was severed and the filler line (larger hose consisting of metal pipe attached to filler on one side and tank on the other with hose and clamps) was mashed partially shut.
I replaced the vapor line very easily but the filler line was almost impossible for me to remove.  Since I didn't see evidence of leaking I ignored it for a day or two.  Eventually I went to fill up before a trip and as I started to fill up, I smelled gas.  I looked under the RV and gasoline was dripping down and onto the ground.
I took it to my mechanic the next day and he charged me $126 to replace the middle metal pipe, hoses and clamps.  I filled the tank immediately afterwards with no leaking at all.

I hope this turns out to be a simple repair for you.

Best wishes,

David 1983 22ft. RL "Suzie III"

Hi Bob,
From looking at the bare chassis at the Mothership, it appears to me that the horizontal rubber hose that goes from the fuel tank to the plastic filler tube is provided by Lazy Daze.  You might simply try to tighten the hose clamps first before going for a more elaborate diagnosis.  An article on "Techsnoz"
