Just wondering....has anyone ever put a bicycle rack on the front grill to carry just one bike?  I originally wanted the kind that slips right into the hitch receiver but decided that was a poor idea if and when I ever tow.  I don't have the back to lift a bike on a ladder bike holder.  I've seen these bike racks on the front of cars but not in a long time.  Does anyone have a better idea for a 'gezzerette' with a bad back?

Thanks!

I understand that Ford will void your warranty if you do. They don't want anything blocking airflow through the radiator. Now, you can argue about whether this is a realistic concern, but I'm just telling you what they'll do.

I have one on my 82 LD.  It's very simple, yet elegant and effective.  It's designed for 2 bicycles, but I only carry one.  I like it a lot.

Problem is I'm sure you can buy it, I could not find it

Judy,
You can use a rear tow hitch receiver mount bike rack on your LD, when you aren't towing. When you're towing, you can still use it by installing a receiver hitch on your toad and mount the bike rack there. The hitch on the toad doesn't have to be heavy duty to hold the bikes.
I prefer carrying bikes behind, as that way they can be protected from road debris and insects etc. You can buy or make inexpensive covers for the bikes to protect them from dirt and rain. Something you can't do if they are mounted up front, as the cover would block air to the radiator as Andy mentioned.

Judy

I built a receiver-type rack and second hitch receiver for the LD's back bumper.
This allows carrying the bikes and towing at the same time.

The same rack can be used on the toad's hitch or any other 2" receiver.

Hi udy,  I have been carrying a bike on the front of Ford mini's for over 20 years.  Never a problem.  Plenty of air flow to the engine.  We have always traveled with a toad, so the front was a logical solution for us.  Go for it.  Doug

Hi Judy,

We have an '87 LD and have both a front bumper mounted bike rack as well as a rear hitch rack. We tend to mostly use the rear hitch rack but the front rack did a fine job as well. Only issue was when we needed to check the oil and had to unhook the front rack to access under the hood. We bought ours through JC Whitney but I don't see it on their website any more. Here's a link to one I found doing a google search http://www.ssbtractor.com/bicycle_carriers.html   Keep in mind tho that you still need to lift the bike up on to the front rack so if you have a bad back or a limit on what you can lift the front rack may not be a suitable answer. We didn't notice a problem with the airflow when the bikes were mounted on front. We don't tow so now tend to use the rear rack unless there are four of us heading to a cycling event. Hope this helps!
