More Public Campground POI's
Yahoo Message Number: 99330
Several weeks ago I posted Part 1 of my public campground POI list project, which covered states east of the Mississippi River.  I've now completed Part 2 - a list for the central US (AR, IA, KS, LA, MN, MO, ND, NE, OK, SD and TX).  You can download both files from my web site - Toad Hall
http://www.wxtoad.com/>
These are Excel files that in some cases may be used just as they are, or depending on your GPS system, you may have to convert them to another file type.  If you're not familiar with how to do that, you can review my GPS/POI primer on my site.
And if you don't have a GPS system, you can still use the files as lists that you can sort by state or location.
I'm now working on the third and final part of the project, the western states.  I'll let you know when I complete and post it.

Hope you find these files useful.

Ted, great list...thanks!
Just one correction to the new list, however...the two letter designation for Arizona is AZ, not AR (which is Arkansas).
At the very top of the list, some of the campgrounds you have listed for Arkansas are actually in Arizona...from "Imperial Dam Long Term Visitor Area (California)" to "Knoll Lake-Happy Jack."  If you take a look at the GPS coordinates, it will quickly become clear which are Arizona campgrounds and which are Arkansas campgrounds.

Hi Ted,
Thanks very much for sharing this useful resource. Very nice and I'll be downloading it into my Nuvi 650.

Ted, you've created a great resource, if only I can figure out how to take advantage of it.  I have a TomTom 330S (thanks to my sons who thought that's what I preferred instead of a Garmin, and I didn't have the heart to ask for the receipt to exchange it -- wimpy Dad).  I'm a rookie at GPS stuff.  I looked at the links on your site, but am still unsure as to how to proceed to translate your XL files into something the TT can use.  Your link led to a page that said there is something called a TomTom POI Editor, but it didn't appear to "edit" XL files. I don't even know what it means to "edit" the files. There also was a POI converter which changed CSV files to OV2 (TT's format?), and vice- versa, but nothing about getting XL files into either of those formats.  I'm lost.  Any suggestions from you or others on the forum? Thanks.  -- Jon

I'm kind-of a devotee of these data files (POI's and others involving geodetic computations).  I'll tell about a program that works for me and might help Jon.

GPS Utility reads and writes GPS instruments, and lets the user process data downloaded from the instrument.

By actual measurement, 97.4% of us would rather *not* have *any* contact with yet another computer program.  If you're one of the rare ones, check out www.gpsu.co.uk

Maybe this will help:  Excel can write a file in the format called .csv (comma-separated-value), and lots of other programs eat those.
To "edit" a file just means to revise some parts of the text, or some of the numbers, and then "save" the revision.

John,

Thanks for the explanation for Jon.  I'm not a real wizard at the conversion stuff, so I appreciate any additional info myself.   And thanks for that link - I'll add it to my GPS info page.

Ah!  Thanks, John.  A (faint) light is beginning to dawn.  I'll try the Excel-to-.cvs process, and then use the converter to get it into a TomTom-usable format.  If that implodes, I'll be back! --Jon
