GAS TANK FILL LINE LEAK

While putting gas in my LD I smelled a strong gas odor and looked under the LD and found gas leaking from the Gas Tank.  It seemed to come from the top of the tank and once the gas stopped pumping it stopped leaking in short order.

I called my local RV repair facility and spoke with the owner, had asked for the service manager as he knows more than the owner-- service manager not available.  Asked the owner if they handle a problem such as this or should I take My LD to the Ford House.  He replied, take it to the Ford House.

The Ford House confirmed that it was the Gas Fill line and would require the tank being dropped at a cost of $1200 plus tax.  I negotiated it down a little--$1050 plus tax.
I then decided to go back to my Rv repair facility and talk with the service manager and he said quiet suredly that they do this type of repair and have done several in the past--cost less than half of the Ford House.

I will advise the final outcome in a few days.

Has anyone experienced this problem with their LD and what was the final outcome--problem, costs--if possible.

I searched the archives and could only come up with a gas fill line problem from the gas tank to the generator--Joanna and Mimi.
Possibly I overlooked some post with my type problem.

Your comments are most welcome.

Many have had problems with leaking generator fuel lines, located at the generator or at the fuel tank.
Unfortunatly, replacing the line at the top of the fuel tank does require dropping the tank.
You might also want to check the rubber fuel line at the generator.

There is a way of rerouting the fuel line which eliminates dropping the tank. The file below is on on Terry's Techsnoz site.

Dear John:
We had this exact problem with our 1990 265MB on a Ford chassis.  An independent repair facility in Cody WY repaired it for $100.00 while we waited.

The overflow line from the filler tube had small size holes.  The repairman removed the filler tube and then cleaned and brazed the metal so all holes were filled.

He said it was very common on older units.

Sincerely, S. Diamond

John,
I had this problem on my '91.  In my case it was because of a careless mechanic.  I had my tanked dropped to replace the fuel pump and when they put it back together, the rubber hose that connects from the filler tube to the tank was not put on correctly.

The cost to drop the tank was a lot less than what you are getting quoted.  I think it was closer to $300 to replace the pump which included dropping the tank.  BTW, if you have a '96 or older chassis, you should consider having the pump replaced while the tank is off.
The pumps prior to '97 had a design flaw and are susceptible to vapor lock.  A condition I did not know was possible on a fuel injected vehicle until it happened to me.  If you do get a new pump, make sure it is the newer type.  I believe they have to modify the electrical connections to make it work.  You can do an internet search to learn more.

Good luck.
