aux gas gage question

My auxiliary gas gage reads pegged when full and half full when empty.
I don't want to fool around with the tank. Can I calibrate it to read closer to correct by putting a resister in the line? I was thinking of getting a variable resister and adjusting it to either full when full or empty when empty.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks,

Thanks for your interest. Yes I have an auxillary gas gauge.

 I currently have a full tank but the gauge reads 3/8ths tank. I can also smell fumes so I think we need to drive on that tank enough to lower the level so there is no smell of gas fumes. We drove home on the main tank after filling the aux. tank.
It took 40.9 gallons. Next time I will stop at 40 and maybe there won't be fume smell.

Hi Sam,
 Did you originally say you had an 82? I have two tanks in my 82, the aux tank in the rear took 40.9 gallons from empty. I don't recall off hand what the main tank holds but at least 30 I'm pretty sure.
 I have a swich to change tanks and each tank has its own fuel pump. I tried using one pump but sputtered on steep hills from the rear tank and also had a vapor lock once so added back the rear tank pump.
 You gave me an idea though since my main tank gauge is accurate I may hook it up to the aux tank and see if it reads full. If so I'll wire the one gauge to the same switch that controls the tanks. It's a DPDT switch anway so I can have the one gauge read both whichever tank I'm running off of.
 Have you checked the ground on your tank gauge? Mine was a poor connection back at the tank and that could be causing your innacuracy. regards,

Hi Sam,
 Interesting, what size tank is it? I'm not all that jazzed of carrying 40 gallons so far behind the rear axle so would use it first on a long trip.

In the 1980s, LDs came standard with a 32-35 gallon tank with an optional 50-gallon tank. I'm not sure if LD installed the bigger tank or if they had a local shop do it. Most of the older LD I have looked at have the bigger tank.
Maybe Ed said, "You need that"
 Auxiliary tanks, are after-market installations and a rare item in my experience.

Once again, Steve (aq433) is your best source of information (excluding Steve Newton) about older LDs due to his long experience with his 1983 LD.
