"Goo" Removal
Yahoo Message Number: 97591
Hello from Sunny Las Cruces:
"Wild Thing" has some residual adhesive on the wall behind the toilet seat where the little plastic bumper fell off...and that sticky stuff has smeared in my not-so-successful attempts to remove it.  Anyone have a proven substance-removal recommendation?

Many thanks in advance.

Naptha (aka lighter fluid). Open all door to allow ventillation. Test on small area of the wall first.

Pam (the cooking spray) has worked well for me on many types of adhesive residue. Spray it on, let sit for a while, and wipe up. It even took up some black adhesive used to affix the gasket to my refrigerator door.

" 'Wild Thing' has some residual adhesive on the wall behind the toilet seat where the little plastic bumper fell off."
As Michael suggested, Goo Gone will remove it. Goof Off will too, but Goof Off is much more hazardous to use than Goo Gone.
I just compared the Material Safety Data Sheets for the two products, and Goof Off is toxic when inhaled, swallowed, or brought into contact with eyes. In addition, "May cause central nervous system depression.
May cause liver damage. May cause kidney damage." And its ingredients (xylene, toluene, benzene, and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether) are mutagenic and carcinogenic, as well as extremely flammable.
By contrast, Goo Gone is is primarily citrus oils, with a small amount of petroleum distillates. "None [of the ingredients] is listed as carcinogenic by OSHA, IARC or NTP, none is an F-code or RCRA-regulated solvent, and none is 'Toxic Air Contaminants'." Goo Gone is rated nontoxic, whether inhaled, swallowed, or brought into contact with eyes or skin. It isn't mutagenic or carcinogenic. It's only moderately flammable. About the only thing you need to worry about is that if you swallow a lot of it and then vomit, and if you inhale the liquid into your lungs while doing so... it *could* be bad for you. I think most of us can be trusted not to drink Goo Gone from the bottle. ;-)

Since in my experience Goo Gone has worked very well on all the adhesives I've tried it on, and it's about as nontoxic a solvent as you can find, I recommend it over Goof Off.
Now with all that chemical stuff out of the way, here's a solution to your basic problem: the stupid plastic stick-on bumper that LD uses on the wall behind the toilet lid. Yeah, mine fell off too. Go to a hardware store or Wal-Mart and look for a package of protectors that look like this: a white plastic disc about the size of a quarter with a beige felt pad covering itand a half-inch nail sticking out the back. In other words, something like a giant, padded thumbtack.

The product is called Felt-Gard, the maker is Shepherd Hardware Products, and the part number is 9955. Take one of these, tap it into the wall with a hammer, and it will never come off. The large felt surface provides much better padding than LD's tiny plastic bumper, too! These come eight to a package, so you can do all your friends' bathrooms while you're at it. :-)

Just don't over soak it, that goes with anything you decide to use.

That's what I use when I want to remove a sticky residue and it works great!
