Ceiling painted - pictures & a table question

Three days of ceiling painting and this Michelangelo is finished!  Ugh - it is not worth it.  Love your ceiling as it is!

Walls are easy to paint.  The ceiling is not.  That is your fair warning.

 Question:  I bought the table leg recently from the factory because I needed a new bracket and the leg came attached.  See how the table leans now because the leg is too long?  Should I move the wall anchors?  I don't know what else to do. I think it looks silly leaning like that.

--- Well, it does *look* a bit odd, but I'd be a lot more concerned about the obvious "compromise of functionality" of a slant-top table! Trying to eat or play cards or use a computer or whatever with all the stuff sliding toward the wall would be pretty annoying! Could you remove the rubber "tip" on the leg, hacksaw the extra length off the leg, and then replace the tip?  (You'd really want to follow that "measure twice, cut once" axiom, though!)

the paint looks GREAT, I love the gloss and reflectiveness of teh ceiling.  I've been toying with the idea of painting our walls, but never considered the ceiling!

Thanks Kate! Yes, I charge a million an hour for ceilings.  :)
 This ceiling paint is also a satin, so I wonder if some of the shine is from it being wet.
 If I remember from your new, light, bright, and airy rig... you don't need to paint your ceiling anyway.  It's already nice.  Ciao Baby is 15 years old (or even 16 now, huh?) - she needed it.
 I'm rearranging the album to put some before's with the after's.  Now that's fun to see, I think.

Thanks for the excellent advice, Joan.  I will wrangle up a hacksaw and take care of that table leg.  I have not cut metal before, but will trust you on this.  And yes, the obvious problem is functionality (I was just being funny, not as stupid as it surely sounded.  :) )

Tessa - As Joan said measure twice or more, cut once - place the leg on a 1x2, use some tape to secure it - cut with a metal blade in your zig saw or similar so it will cut fast/straight - the wood helps ya hang onto it.

 I concur. It is NOT an easy job. I must say though that painting the ceiling really brightened things up, especially with the darker wood in my 1979 LD.

I put Kilz on mine first, and then a coat of white paint, and that covered it real well. After putting the Kilz coat on with a normal size trim brush and roller, I went and got a rather narrow trim brush and a small foam roller for the next coat. That went so much better. With the larger brush and roller I was constantly getting paint on things I didn't want it on, and would have to stop and carefully wipe it off. It took forever.
 How's your neck Tessa? After I finished painting the ceiling of my rig I thought I'd never get my neck out of that position again!

The topic of AAA RV Plus Towing Insurance has come up in the past. The consensus was that AAA RV Plus towing insurance did not cover all the areas a person might travel and other towing companies might provide a more consistent service..
 I was contacted by AAA today as to why I did not renew my membership. I mentioned the discussions brought up here. He told me this:
 - AAA is a national organization comprised of local affiliates. These affiliates do not offer standardized policies, i.e., not all AAA jurisdictions carry AAA RV Plus.
 - AAA members who pay for AAA RV Plus are indeed covered for the services they pay for. The caveat is that the member may have to initially pay the extra expenses but they will be reimbursed by their local AAA.
 In light of the fact that AAA will cover my girlfriend¹s 25-year-old daughter where Good Sam¹s ERS and others I have checked, won¹t I am tending to renew with AAA for another year.
 QUESTION: Has anyone gone through the process of having to be reimbursed for AAA RV Plus service? Any other experiences?

Fern!  Where was my fair warning?  :)  Hey, I'd love to see your pictures sometime of all your hard work.  I'll bet your rig's a beauty!

I was just whining to Virginia about my neck last night!  The cabover ceiling is a welcome relief to paint- at least you can rest your head while painting.
 Good point about the smaller roller.  I tried them all and agree that the smaller roller was much more useful than the large one.  I also used an angled trim brush and then a very tiny artist brush. I'm so grateful it's over.

Virginia, great tips on how to cut that table leg.  You're awesome!

 That's what I did. By the way, a standard round rubber crutch tip will work fine when the square plastic one wears out.

Here's a second caveat:  Not only do you have to initially pay for the services, you also have to FIND them.  IMHO, one of the main benefits of an RV-oriented ERS is that the person who answers the phone will ask the right questions and send out the right person and equipment.

Judging by the various AAA horror stories posted by RVers in various forums over the years, the main problem isn't reimbursement. The problem is that far too many AAA affiliates don't have either the skills or the equipment to tow an RV! Time and again I've read of folks who broke down and called AAA, only to have a lightweight wrecker show up with a driver who had never handled anything bigger than an SUV in his life.
 Usually one of two things then happened: if the RVers were lucky, the driver threw up his hands and admitted that he wasn't equipped to deal with a motorhome, leaving the stranded RVers to find a heavy-duty wrecker on their own. If they weren't lucky, the driver tried to do the job with the flimsy equipment he had--a recipe for disaster.

In short, the problem isn't payment--it's that in many areas of the US, AAA-affiliated wreckers are utterly unprepared to deal with your rig. (And reportedly that's true if you paid extra for their RV coverage.)

I wouldn't risk such a scenario. Get CoachNet--that's my advice.

 This, all by itself, would be reason enough for us not to use AAA.  And, as Joanne said, you would not only have to pay for the service, you'd have to FIND the service...something that could be difficult if you're in an unfamiliar area.
 Why not have your girlfriend's 25-year-old daughter pay for her own ERS?

We have had two experiences using Good Sam's ERS.
 We were in Santa Fe on our way to Albuquerque to have a problem with our Freightliner FL-60 diagnosed at the ABQ Freightliner dealer.  Well, the problem cropped up while we were on our way there which finally meant that we had to pull off the road and call our ERS for a tow.  At the time, we were about 25-30 miles outside of ABQ (the Freightliner dealer is at the far west end of ABQ, where the Camping World is, so I don't know how far we were from there).
 When I called the ERS, I told them we needed a BIG tow truck because our combination weighed close to 30,000#.  They sent out the proper sized tow truck and we were towed (truck and fifth wheel together) to the ABQ Freightliner dealer.  If we'd been in a position where *we* had to find a tow truck, I don't know what we would have done...who would we have called? We didn't know any of the tow services in ABQ, let alone their telephone numbers.  We probably would have been stuck there for hours until the highway patrol stopped.
 On another occasion, we were driving east on I-10 in the middle of no-where Texas on a Sunday afternoon.  We had a flat tire on the fifth wheel and were without a spare (long story as to why we didn't have a spare).  Again, we called our ERS holding out little hope that they could find a tire dealer open on a Sunday afternoon!  Well, they did, and within an hour or two, we were on our way again.  Here was another situation where, if we had had to find our own tire dealer, we would have had no idea who to call or what their telephone number was.

 I do plan to create a page of photos of what I've done to it so far, but it's one of those things I just haven't gotten to yet. Too many other things above it on my To Do list!

Jim, I got the Progressive tow policy too.  For just $30, it seems like decent coverage at an economical price.  Please let me know if you hear otherwise.

Jim, I can't comment on CoachNet, but we did have occasion to use the Progressive Road side services this last summer. We had a tread separation on one of our inside duals in a semi remote part of I-505 in Northern California. We were in the Zamora hills wich is probably 20 miles from Woodland, CA  which was probably the largest city nearby. We called the Progressive number on our insurance and noted our call was rerouted. After about 5 minutes of talking, I finally figured out I was not talking to the roadside service people, but a central office person and redialed the roadside service and got a connection to someone who could help. They sent a tow truck and service person, but that person came from a town about 50 miles away and it took about an hour for them to arrive. The service "kid" changed our tire quickly and we were on our way. Waiting an hour for service isn't so bad in an RV. Since it was near 100 degrees outside we fired up the generator(no neighbors to bother),turned on the AC then cooked and ate dinner while we waited. We have no complaints about the Progressive service except they may not have a contract with the a company in the town closest to where you have had a break down. Oh and one of the first things the service center person wanted to know was if we had a spare tire.

 One good thing about Coach-Net is that they don't just have telephone operators... they have RVIA-certified techs on duty 24/7. So they can not only get you a mechanic; they may be able to talk you through a problem, so that you don't need a service call. That's smart.
 Escapees recommends Coach-Net, and has a chart on their site comparing Coach-Net services with those of AAA's and KOA's road service plans:

 And I know many people who are happy with them. I'm still on Camping World's RoadCare service, which has been fine on the three occasions I've used it, but I will be switching to Coach-Net when my current term is up.
 Oh, and answering the question that began this thread: Coach-Net's FAQ says that "All dependent children up to the age of 24 either living at home or attending school are covered at no additional cost for any vehicle they drive, including rented or borrowed."

Actually, you only need to buy a new rig every THREE years to be covered by Ford  :)
