Government $40 Digital TV converter coupon January 04, 2008, 04:45:51 pm Yahoo Message Number: 87878As many know, unless your LD is of recent vintage, your TV will not be able to pick up any TV station with your antenna next year. If you are not ready to replace your TV, you may want to get a "converter" to keep your TV usable. The US government, and specifically the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, is issuing $40 coupons which can be used at many retailers to buy a converter. The coupons are good for 90 days. There is a limit of 2 coupons per household. Over 1.9 million coupons have already been issued since January the 1st.The FAQ is here: http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/faq.htmlThere is no telling how cheap the converters will be as the analog TV "black out" approaches. There is a chance it may cheaper to forget the coupon and buy a converter in a year. YMMV.Alex Rutchka '05 MB, SE #4

QuoteThere is a chance it may cheaper to forget the coupon and buy a converter in a year. YMMV. So true - but I've ordered ours, just in case. BTW, they will not be sending out the coupons for a couple of months yet, so perhaps the selection will be wider then. I checked into one unit approved - the Digital Stream D2A1D10, and it is listed as powered by 9V DC (I guess from a 'brick'), so it should not be hard to make an adapter to power off 12V DC. Likely, that will be the case with some of the other units too. It seems likely that these approved units will not have HD output capability, of little concern for most intending to use them in their RV.Steve
Re: Government $40 Digital TV converter coupon Reply #3 – January 05, 2008, 03:14:23 pm Yahoo Message Number: 87925I have ordered one of the coupons but I still am considering replacing my 15' LCD which runs on 12VDC with a 19" HD which has a 12V supply. I have found a couple by looking for the black power supply module at retailers. My DVD is also 12V so I would like to avoid an extra inverter or dc/dc converter if possible. Jack

Of course, any full-HD set, as well as most other non-HD ones coming on the market now, will have an ATSC tuner and you won't need the box. In fact, I suspect I will eventually replace our 13" LCD currently with a newer set, since it will still work at our house from our home satellite or cable systems.Steve
