Kentucky Derby?

Has anyone been to, organized, or participated in an LD group going to the Kentucky Derby?

Does Marial like to organize that trip along with the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta?  :)

I know that some Caravan groups go there, but I was shocked at the price.  Then I saw their price for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.
I'm sure that we could do the Derby on our own.

Does that sound fun to anyone else?

And look!  This year's Derby happens on my 40th birthday!  May 3rd, 2008.  Now that sounds like a good present to me!  Where is Ned?

I'm look around for my hat and silver mint julep cup in eager anticipation.

So *nobody* has been to the Kentucky Derby??  Well, the more I think about this trip, the more I like it!

I've done extensive research regarding where to stay, what to see, where to go, how to get tickets, etc.  I've saved it all for you

If you go be sure not to miss the Kentucky Horse Park. Not only is the RV park one of beauty but the farm will provide an education on horses second to none.

My late wife discovered which farms her favorite horses came from.

Not only that but a drive through the country side, past all those beautiful farms, is delightful as well. And, you're not far from Ft.
Knox and all that gold, nor are you far from Daniel Boone country.

I could have spent a lot more time there but we were in too much of a hurry to 'get it down the road'.

In addition to the horses and the wineries and the beautiful
countryside, don't forget the bourbon distilleries.  I do not drink alcohol, but I was fascinated by the entire process and most of all by the heavenly fragrance in the aging barns.  Oh, yes ... they give samples at the end of the tours.

Have fun, but drive carefully!!!

Tessa,
KY Horsepark Campground *is* lovely, very pretty, nicely spaced out, conveniently located.  It's one of our most favorite campgrounds, but a few things to keep

It gets booked solid if there are any events going on, like dog shows, music fests, or big horse shows at the Horse Park.

This KY state parks' website has a lot of good information, and there's a list of horse shows and events at page bottom. Contact the park for a current/revised schedule. (And, do read the caveats about when the water's turned off and minimum stays and whatnot.)

I really enjoyed the tour of the barns, seeing some "name" race horses (retired) in the stalls, and watching the farrier make special shoes for the draft horses that the park keeps to draw the "jitney" for the tourists.

My wife and I enjoyed our visit to the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington a couple years ago and had the same experience described by Joan.  You do not need to be a horse person to enjoy this facility.
We would rate it as one of the top ten places we have visited
