We use CB's extensively for caravanning with some close friends on annual excursions, for communicating in remote cell-sparse areas. At first they tried one of these, but despite the plastic skin of their Winnie, the aluminum frame effectively blocked the signal when we trailed them. With a LD, I would expect even worse results.

Hi John - Congrads on your order - we've had our LD for little over 2 months now - just love her as you will yours - Yes, we have used the hand held CB's for years and really enjoy and get info need - we have an outside magnetic antenna also, but it gets good distance in tight traffic without too - it is also great as others in vehicle can operate - If your just wanting to pick up truckers on road blocks or stay in touch on a caravan it is a nice way to go and transferable to different vehicles + on a caravan when parked can use outside on batteries.

I have a question.

I need to buy c-b in January (we're on the Baja and back cruise).
"Truck" (his name) has the old antenna and power connection factory-installed in '01.  Over the dashboard.  But the radio has long since moved away.

Is it practical to buy some kind of handheld, and to use the roof antenna?  What should I look for to mate to that weird zigzag connector?

This topic came just at the right time for me- thanks!

John

A hand held will probably be fine and Radio Shack may be the answer to your compatibility questions.

Sorry, but a hand-held CB won't do the job when you're in a Caravan of 5 or more LD's. We had CB problems when we were on our Baja'NBack trip, borrowed a hand held and if we were further back than 2nd from the leader we couldn't pick up what was said.

"Is it practical to buy some kind of handheld, and to use the roof antenna?"

Sure, with the caveats that others have noted: most handhelds don't have the full 4W power of a console-mount CB, and unless you get a 12V adapter cable, you'll go through batteries pretty rapidly. But it will work, and with the roof antenna you'll get decent if not outstanding range. (The "rubber duckie" antenna that comes with the handheld, on the other hand, will do poorly inside a metal RV.)

"What should I look for to mate to that weird zigzag connector?"

That's a BNC connector, and I wish all connectors were as well designed: it's quick and easy to connect--just push and turn 60 degrees--and makes a positive lock that can't pull loose or unscrew.
You can get an adapter at any Radio Shack; you want BNC to what's commonly called "UHF" (technically, SO-259). The adapter's BNC end should be male and its "UHF" end should be female.

The hand held would have been fine if you had a factory installed antenna which is what we are talking about here!! Todd

Regarding the roof antenna. Can you connect the same one the radio is attached to or do you need a separate antenna?

The very modest  Cobra hand-held "RoadTrip" worked just fine for communicating with a 10-rig caravan out to the Lazy Daze 50th anniversary event in Cheyenne and for receiving daily announcements while I was there.  Not being electrically inclined, I just stuck the little magnetic antenna through the passenger  window and onto the LD's hood.  It also features NOAA weather alerts and comes with a 12-volt cord.

Hi John,
Since I will no longer be able to go to Baja with the group (or without!!), and as my CB is working fine, how would it be if I just unhook it and mailed it to you to use for your trip, you lucky dog?
This way I could be going to Baja even though I don't go in person!!!
Let me know and I will get it into the mail to you fast so you can try it out and make sure it is up to your standards. I won't be using it for a while, but it was working fine on my trip to WA for T'giving.

Happy New Year and happy Happy and safe driving,

Sheila

You need an antenna designed for CB (27 Mhz) frequencies. An antenna designed for AM/FM radio won't work well at all, and there's even a possibility it could damage your CB's transmitter section.
The ideal is a CB antenna on the roof. But as Joanne pointed out, even a $20 magnet-mount CB antenna stuck to the hood will work a lot better than the stubby little "rubber duckie" antenna that comes with a handheld CB unit.

Whoops! I didn't know any of the LDs had plastic hoods. What year is yours, Dave?

I have an '06.  Caught me by surprise too.  I was planning on using a mag mount VHF stick on the way home.  Oh well...   still got home fine though  :)

Ahhhhh, there's the difference. The one we borrowed had no antenna.

Thought about that, but with any antenna that sticks up, there is no place on the fender that resembles horizontal that would work, not even for my 19-inch stick.  Might have worked for your hockey puck, but I even doubt that.

--- I'm pretty sure that your rig has a "plastic" hood, too, Andy! Mine does, and it's also a 2003.  I don't know when Ford changed the compostion of the hood from steel to plastic; anyone know?

Come to think of it, I don't remember ever trying to attach anything magnetic to the hood... so you may well be right, Joan! I should have known better than to assume.

Thanks for the offer, Sheila ...  sorry you'll miss the Baja.

My plan (as of now) is to buy a handheld, and patch it to the roof antenna using a (properly selected) patch cable.  That is, if RShack has the parts I need.  If that tactic succeeds I'll have cb when (and only when) I need it.

The original factory installed radio was evidently dead-on-arrival, but I never noticed until it was 3 or 4 yrs old.

Hello John,
I'm on the Baja trip also and I've got a couple of spare CB's; one dash mount that should plug right up to your LD and the other an old handheld with magnetic antenna. I'll bring them both along.  Look forward to meeting you in February.
