Protecting the toad

Finally, bought an 08 Chevy HHR to tow. Still have to get the base plate and brakes done.
 I have searched posts here for what others have used for protecting the front end from chips and debris. I am considering the Protect a Tow underskirt which seems to be the best idea or a bra on the toad.

Opinions appreciated.

Jim, I have used the Protect-A-Tow for years and find it works very well.  Here are photos of it installed on our Honda and '02 30': http://tinyurl.com/lmuwn Were I to buy a new car to tow, I would use the PAT in combination with a tow shield  http://tinyurl.com/yufo2l that sits on the bumper of the toad.  The combo won't stop all the crud but should get most of it.  My '95 Honda is getting long enough in the tooth that I don't worry too much anymore.  Here's a new product I haven't seen before:  http://tinyurl.com/ys54h6  It appears to combine the PAT and the Guardian Shield.

We have a '99 RB, and tow an '02 Honda CRV. While I considered different options on protection for the CRV, I had a bra that I used for a while. After a few thousand miles, the edge of the bra started wearing a line on the hood, so I discontiuned it. We have towed it for 70 thousand miles without any added protection and have not had any dings. This includes paved and unpaved roads. At the same time the LD has sustained several rock dings and a cracked windshield.
I am sure different people have different experiences, but I am not going to spend money for something, that in my experience, is of low risk. I may be sorry tomorrow, when the rock goes through the windshield.
So, I guess it is what makes your comfortable.

I have to chime in here: we have a 94 MB and a 99 Honda CR-V. We have towed for at least 6 years without any protection for the toad. I have to echo what Chris stated: we have lots of dings on the front fenders of the LD but NO dings on the Honda. That's through unimaginably hidious roads in Baja and some "adventure" roads that lead to nowhere in the states.

The culprit in Colorado and other western states is the sand mixture used on the highways after snowfalls.  It lingers on the roads even into the summer months and causes the majority of the dinging, pitting and corrosive effect on vehicles and towing really stirs the residual sand up.  The outer edges of my Honda which are unprotected by the Protect-A-Tow look like they have been sandblasted.  It is rare for anyone in this neck of the woods to go through vehicle ownership without eventually replacing a windshield or at least having some serious cracking/starring.

 We have used the PAT for 4 years now to protect our CR-V.  I will say the windshield stays significantly cleaner than our Saturn without the PAT did (we didn't care about the Saturn since we bought it as a "beater" car).
 Now, we are talking a little bit MacIntoshes and Granny Smiths here, since our rig is a diesel pusher with a large solid rubber mudflap, but what we notice most is the deflection of the occasionally road gator (piece of tire tread).  When we've had to drive over one, we can see it deflect off the underside of the PAT
