I've come across, bought and use with increasing pleasure a hanging pockets storage system...it's meant for jewelry items, but I now have a cell phone charger in one pocket, a small clock, a small flashlight, some safety pins, etc., as well as jewelry in pockets.
It is found on QVC...click on "Jewelry" at the top  of their home page and then "Joan Rivers Collection."  It is item HO1890...there are two models of this item...one is straps for necklaces and the other is pockets.
The really neat part of this is that it has pockets or straps on both sides...it is designed to hang in your closet alongside shirts, etc., therefore accessible from both sides...I've hung mine (pockets model) on the inside of one of the closet doors with a plastic over-the-door hook.

While a shoe caddy is great with deeper pockets, this has many many all-clear small pockets...a couple of different sizes, but mostly small.

Hope someone finds this as useful an item as I have.

I have one of these things and was just looking at it today, wondering if I should relocate my earrings, etc. to a tackle box instead.  I started to move items over and realized that this hangie thingie is still the best way to go.  I got mine at Target, I think, and it has 40 pockets on each side.  I have mine hanging on the door of my bathroom (
