Garmin MapSource Code?
Yahoo Message Number: 86908
My neighbor had a Garmin Street Pilot III that he wants to sell, but he doesn't have the security code for the MapSource CD.  Does anyone know a program that will identify the code?  Garmin is worse in that respect than MS!

If he ever registered the Mapsource CD with Garmin, he might be able to get it from the registration database.  Has he tried calling Garmin?

"My neighbor had a Garmin Street Pilot III that he wants to sell..."
General info, in case anybody was thinking of buying this: it's a very old StreetPilot model that's not even close in performance to the 2600/2700/2800 series StreetPilots. Published tests have shown it to be only about 20% as fast as a 2005-vintage StreetPilot 2610, for example.
It has a very small memory capacity, so it can't hold a complete map and POI database. The memory is expandable, but the StreetPilot III uses hard-to-get proprietary Garmin memory modules that cost many times as much as the standard CompactFlash or SD cards used by newer GPSs.
StreetPilot III GPSs are selling on eBay for $75 to $150, but because of its sluggish performance and other limitations, I would not recommend buying this model at any price.

Glen: If the CD was ordered from Garmin then he has to pay a fee in order to obtain the code to unlock the MapSource.

Thanks to Andy and all of the rest who responded to my question.  I realize that the Street Pilot III is old, and limited in capability.  My wife thinks that she needs a GPS to find her way around Phoenix when she goes there and she cannot/willnot read a map.  She wants a GPS which she will use two or three times, get frustrated with it, and sit it on the shelf!  I can probably buy this unit for about $25 because the neighbor, who bought it at an estate sale (previous owner died) is getting frustrated with it as he is NOT computer savvy.  He has the software, just no code number and Garmin is worse than MS in this respect.  If I can't figure out how to get the code from the unit or the CD, I'll pass.  I'm not spending well over $100 to buy another CD and a code from Garmin as they suggested.  And, in fact, I'd probably buy some other brand as I don't care for their attitude.

I hope that this answers most of the questions asked by the members.
