FYI this Ford technical bulletin indicates that for 'E' series Ford vehicles 1981 ' 2004; Mercon ATF is being replaced by Mercon V ATF as a service fluid.  Ford no longer sells Mercon!  This TSB also applies to many other Ford products.  Ford indicates that Mercon V is a 'synthetic blend' whatever that means.  I just thought that you'd like to know.

Per the publication date of the TSB (June 29, 2006), it would seem that any ATF addition or service since then (if done by a Ford shop or somebody who didn't have a lot of extra Mercon on the shelf!) would have switched to Mercon V...?
