Folks start arriving Xmas day and stay through New Years day. It's held at the large, 'parking lot' campground at Furnace Creek. It has become extremely popular. Bring a 4X4 toad, if you have one.EnjoyLarry

Do you know if there is any cell service? WIFI?R

Re: Death Valley anyone? Reply #4 – November 20, 2007, 09:25:47 am Yahoo Message Number: 86124Do you know if there is any cell service? WIFI? According to one person who was attending the 49ers encampment in DV just recently, Verizon works with the use of an external antenna (they may also have had an amplifier...I don't remember the details now of what they said). No WiFi unless you park next to someone with HughesNet service, they have their modem on a router, and have their signal open for others to use. (Of course, if you have a Verizon air card with an external antenna and an amplifier, you *might* be able to get service...the person who said they had Verizon cell phone service in DV with an external antenna didn't say what kind of signal they were getting).Linda Hylton http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=1167 http://earl-linda.blogspot.com/

I suggested a 4X4 because many of the group rides do get into areas where the extra traction and clearance is necessary. I would go ahead and take it. You will not run out of places and things to see in four days.Last year there was a weak analog cell signal that my wife's phone could use. I'm sure that eventually, a digital signal will be available, maybe even now. Either way the signals are weak and required the use of an external rooftop antenna. An amplifier would help even more. Across the street from the Furnace Creek campground(parking lot) is the Furnace Creek Ranch Resort. I remember that someone was able to pickup a WiFi signal, from the Ranch, using a directional antenna. You may be able to carry your laptop across the street and get a stronger signal if it is not encrypted. A few more suggestions. Make sure to top off your gas tank(s) before entering the Park. Gas there is super expensive. If you have a filled 5-gallon propane tank (BBQ type), bring it with you for the multiple propane space heaters, used in the evenings. Ground fires are not allowed. Campgrounds in other parts of the Park do allow fires but not in the Furnace Creek area Bring your camera and a lot of memory or film, the sights are amazing.Larry
Re: Death Valley anyone? Reply #6 – November 20, 2007, 12:00:19 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86144Larry: Thanks for all of the helpful info. I have two other 4X4's but they are not towable. I will bring a propane tank as suggested. I have a roof antenna for my cell so hopefully it will work along with my still active at this time Verizon back door for limited net access.
Re: Death Valley anyone? Reply #7 – November 21, 2007, 08:30:50 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86188I am at Furnice Creek now and am using the visitor center's wifi. Works great. No back door on Verizon though. Only get a marginal analog signal. Weather's great! Oh and the pool/showers are $4 and worth it, the pool is naturally heated! Dave
Re: Death Valley anyone? Reply #8 – November 21, 2007, 10:37:52 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86192Does this require advance planning or can one just show up. We are going to Ridgecrest for the ultra marathon to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday the first weekend in Dec, but might be able to make it to Death Valley over the holiday. I guess I will have to find out if the golf course is open then to get my OH interested. Good thing the stock market is tanking and he (dear) will not need to watch Kramer 24/7! Happy thanksgiving to all, and loved the pregnant turkey story...laughed out loud (LOL).[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
