Has anyone here purchased a Tom Tom ONE 3rd Edition GPS device?  I have pretty much decided on a Garmin 650, but came across one of these Tom Tom's for half the price.  Is it a matter of getting what you pay for or is the Tom Tom comparable to the Garmin overall?

Consumer's Report rates the TomTom One as a CR Best Buy for those on a budget.

a Garmin 650
 The report didn't test the Garmin 650 but the Garmin Nuvi 660  got the second best rating of all tested units. The TomTom 910 got the top rating.

 Just keep in mind that CR tests with general users in mind, and they might not place a high value on a feature that's important to you.
For example, most users couldn't care about the ability to navigate to a location by specifying its longitude and latitude.  But many RVers find this feature very important.

For what its worth, I'm not familiar with Tom Tom products -- I am happy with my Garmin 350.  I just want to encourage folks to look beyond the "ratings" to make sure they get want they want/need.

Noel, The TomTom offers free on-line updates to maps as they are revised.
From what I have seen on the Garmin site they charge for updates.  Is that correct and how important do you think that is?

If so, that's a definite advantage.  Garmin does charge for updates, altho I received a free copy of the "2008" map data which was released a few months after I bought my unit.
 However, keep in mind that all these maps are a little "out of date" as soon as they're released.  For example, the 08 data was released in 07, so I assume they gathered the raw data in 06!  Businesses which have started up, folded, or moved will be wrong.  Recent road construction, streets changed from two-way to one-way, etc won't be reflected.
 But free updates would certainly mean fewer of such errors.  /noel/

If you are Costco member, you might want to look at the Magellan 4040.  They just dropped the price to $300.00

This is high end unit and one that I have.  It has performed beyond my expectations.  It has the capability to enter longitude and latitude coordinates.  As far as I know they do not charge for map updates.  As stated earlier, look for features etc. that you want.
 Also, this Magellan 4040 was my first GPS so I'm not an expert by any means.

When I was looking for my first GPS and Costco had the Nuvi 350 on a special deal, I Googled Nuvi 350 and read some great reviews from knowledgeable people experiencied with it and with other brands. That convinced me to get the 350 (which was $650 at the time--on sale!). I suggest Googling all the units that you are considering before buying and read about all the pluses and minuses. You will learn a lot and may be able to make a more informed decision. Good luck. They're a great tool.

I have no idea what CR says about this, but it's another budget GPS unit. FWIW, my cousin is very happy with his. Navigon is made by Magellan. The $180 "deal" is only for today.
 Just my guess...the $150 mark is likely to be the low point for budget GPS devices (new) this year. I saw a refurbished Garmin i3 last week for $100.

 Thanks, Jerry. So much for my $150 theory. :-) Free real-time traffic alerts sound great. I thought they usually charge a fee for that feature.
