Baja Caravan November 13, 2007, 07:23:35 pm Yahoo Message Number: 85912Hi Group/Cult members, My DH and I have been priviledged to be chosen to fill a spot left vacant on a caravan to Baja and back in February with all LDs!! How cool is that? If any of you have been on either this particular caravan or any caravan and have some words of wisdom for me, I would be really grateful. I have no idea of the protocols involved etc, and would appreciate it if there are some hints you can give me. If the LDers that cancelled are on this list, I do hope this is by choice and not some illness that caused you to have to drop out. You will be in my prayers. I will do my best to hold to the high standards that LDers are known for. If you have some insights or tips for me, would you email me off line so we don't take away from the important issues on this discussion group? My email is: sheilabrown at mac dot com.Gratefully, and nervously excited.SheilaFootloose '97 teal MBPacking for T'giving trip to Whidbey Island Friday.

Re: Baja Caravan Reply #2 – November 13, 2007, 09:46:10 pm Yahoo Message Number: 85919QuoteMy wife and I will be with you on the Baja and Back LD caravan. Once you send in your deposit you will get a very complete packet from the tour operators that I think will answer all your questions. They are in Mexico right now so I won't get anything before mid December.QuoteMy only advice right now would be that if you do not have passports, file for them immediately so you have time to receive them before you leave. I don't think you want to travel out of the country these days without one.Renewing Jack's. Mine is good for another year.Quote Also, they want you to have a CB. Got that.Quote And of course if the LD needs any repairs or service make plans to get that done. Will get serviced before leaving, but right now no issues.QuoteWe're looking forward to a great month in Baja. And to meeting you. Us too, thanks for the info Terry.Sheila Footloose '97 Teal MB

How cool is that? Hi you guys Sherry and I are also late arriving crew members for the Baja caravan.Did you e-mail meet Pete yet? He sent us a stack of newsletters, introducing the folks whose plans are more orderly than ours :-) Maybe you and us can get into the latest edition. I talked w Barry just before they set out (from BC, I think) for the SW. He sent the package to me already - it's very nicely done and promises well for the trip. He's the leader, and he says he's got a red truck, so I guess it'll be easy to follow him.Planning and preparation? Gosh, I guess we'll look it all over carefully, but if our equipment is well maintained it'll be ok. I've got one item - a length of stout rope - that will come along and can contribute if any of us gets in the sand. On the debit side, I've only got about six words of Spanish.Pretty good adventure coming; see you there.Johnjpwoodruff at gmail dot com

There are no protocols to observe as the leaders are very casual and friendly; and since you are among such a fabulous group you have no worries at all. Our Caravan encountered damage to the roads, bridges and campgrounds due to a hurricane the area had experienced just months before; you should not have to deal with that.Just relax, observe all the hints and suggestions the leaders will give you at orientation and follow the tour itinerary in the book they provide.Via Con Dios,Anne JohnsonLovely La Verne, CA

Note that their website says they are touring now, so expect a few days for an email response:"For 2009, we are planning 5 tours of 25 day duration. Tentative dates are Jan 7 & 9, Feb 4 & 6, March 6, 2009. We are now taking names for the Preferred Notification List for those who are interested. Send us an email, including phone number. Re: Baja Caravan (2009) Reply #12 – November 16, 2007, 04:27:51 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86018.....I wonder what the kids' school would think of an "intensive Spanish course exploring Mexico for a month"?? We might have to change our rig's name to "Adios BEBÈ!" I have two takes on this, first as a student and then as a teacher. When I was in grade 7, my dad took me out of school for a week so we could fly a Piper J3 Cub from So. Cal. to its new owner in New Mexico. We flew there and took the train back home. It was the experience of a lifetime for me. Way better than that week in school would have been. Then as a teacher, I frequently had students who came to me saying they were going with their parents on a trip to wherever for a week, a month, or something in between. I always told them "This is what we will be studying." I gave them a batch of assignments (mostly mathematics) and told them they had to do work on them two hours a day while they were traveling. They also had to bring me a T-shirt from where they were, and I gave them $15 to pay for it. They were required to take photographs and make a scrapbook (later a video) to share with the class upon return. It was a fantastic learning experience for them, the rest of the class, and I got a bunch of neat T-shirts. Oh yeah, I also became one of their all-time favorite teachers because of the "coolness" factor.Gary, in Chico CA See what's new at http://www.aol.com[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: Baja Caravan (2009) Reply #13 – November 16, 2007, 04:48:00 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86019I love those stories! Thanks for sharing. I'll bet you were a cool teacher. By the time you piled on all that math they were probably so relieved that you just wanted a t- shirt. "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." Mark TwainLove that, Tessa
Re: Baja Caravan (2009) - RV travel with kids in Mexico Reply #14 – November 16, 2007, 06:46:07 pm Yahoo Message Number: 86021QuoteI wonder what the kids' school would think of an "intensive Spanish course exploring Mexico for a month"?? We might have to change our rig's name to "Adios BEBÈ!" Tessa in TX http://www.bajaandback.com/>The baja and back website is very nice and might stir your desires for travel to Baja. However, I did notice that they do say their caravans are adults only. "BAJA and BACK! offers 28 day escorted, adults-only RV caravan tours from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas and back in your own or a rented Recreational Vehicle."Maybe they would be flexible on that policy if you talked to them about it. Another possibility would be to take your children on your own or go with a group of other RVers with children. There are some accounts on the web of those who have RV travelled throughout Mexico with children. Also, we have met a family from England that has done that.Myself, I would like to spend some of the winter months in Baja. My wife is less enthusiastic and somewhat fearful and apprehensive. We have a daughter in first grade. Here in California the schools are reimbursed from the state according to the attendance of the children. They will permit a child to be absent for up to three weeks if the parent signs a "contract" with the teacher to complete certian assignments (sometimes completing a journal is included.) When the family returns, the work is turned into the teacher and kept by the school as proof that the contract was completed.Dove-tailing the three week absence with a scheduled school break would probably provide adequate time for a nice baja trip.Via con Dios,Ken in San Diego

My wife is less enthusiastic and somewhat fearful and apprehensive. We have a daughter in first grade.Ken (and Wife): Calm your fears about travel in Mexico. The reports of roving ban dido's are vastly overstated. We know of many, many RV'rs - mostly Lazy Daze owners - who routinely travel in Mexico without incident. Away from the tourist-trap areas the Mexican people you would encounter are friendly and not looking for trouble. The worst you might encounter is listening to an all night party with much singing and laughter until the wee, very wee hours.Regarding the B&B trips, the adults only is due, I believe, to some restaurant group get-togethers, some serving of Margaritas in the evening, and the normal adult joke-telling. I don't know if they are flexible in this rule, the only way to find out is to call Barry and ask. He and his wife, Vanda, are the tour owners, and extremely nice people.Anne JohnsonLovely La Verne, CA

The reports of roving ban dido's are vastly overstated. Overstated, perhaps; but not a myth. Here's a link to a recent (11/14) San Diego Tribune newspaper article talking about some disturbing incidents. Bottom line: traveling solo might not be a great idea, and even some of these victims were traveling with other vehicles. --Jon http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/mexico/tijuana/20071114-9999- 1m14baja.html
