Water Pump Strainer Question
Yahoo Message Number: 85898
I have the Shurflo Whisper King Model 2093 which came with our '02 30'.  The manual says to clean the strainer periodically (which I have never done).  The manual provides decent enough instructions but I am wondering if those of you who might have cleaned the strainer have any tips or headsups before I attempt this job.

Chris,

I just tackled this yesterday, after reading the manual for the first time in a long time.  I've been having problems with my pump (the exact same one as yours), with it acting like it loses pressure and you can hear the pump running quietly even when all faucets are closed.  To clear it, you have to run a faucet or flush the toilet a fair length of time before the pump will come on to full pumping status.

Anyway, I removed the strainer and checked it.  There was absolutely nothing in it - clean as a whistle.   I removed it by lossening the plastic nut that holds the intake hose in place, and then unscrewed the strainer housing from the pump.  Onve you have it out, it's easy to see how it snaps apart and back together.  Mine had a plastic cable tie through the lugs to keep it from coming apart; I did not see that tie until I had the strainer out.  I had to cut that off to get the strainer open, and I put a new one (thanks to Susan Fain who was watching me do this) on before replacing the strainer on the pump.

The directions mention putting some petroleum jelly on the O-ring before putting the strainer back together, which I did.

Result: the pump's performance is slightly better, making me think that perhaps the dried-out O-ring mat have allowed to lose suction.
But...24 hours later, it still does it occasionally.

I'm leaning toward replacing the pump.  Nukamper suggested a Flojet, which doesn't use a pressure switch like the Shurflo.

Assuming you can get to your pump fairly easily, the strainer thing is a simple task.  Good luck.
