OT question for mechanics November 08, 2007, 05:57:21 pm Yahoo Message Number: 85715Hi all, I need some help with engine part names. We have a 1993 Toyota pickup here in Mexico and the mechanic told me today that we need some parts that he can't get here. My son is flying down for Thanksgiving and I want to have him bring them but I'm not sure I have the names right. The hardest one is a gasket, it goes above where the spark plugs are and under the top metal part of the engine. I wish I had remembered what he called it in spanish as then I might have a better way of finding it. At any rate, what I've come up with so far is a Valve Cover Gasket. It comes alone and as a kit. Anyone (Larry?) able to tell me if this sounds right? I asked if it was the head gasket and he said no and showed me where the head gasket was, it was below where the spark plugs go in. The other parts are an air filter, that one was easy. The 3rd thing I think is an Air Flow Sensor. Do these sound like real parts?I know this isn't LD related but this is the one place I knew there were a lot of smart mechanics and I've only got a short time to get my son out there to find them. He is a computer whiz but knows little about car engines. Thanks tons,

We have a 1993 Toyota Since you have seen the parts he needs, this is what I suggest - go to: http://www.importeccatalog.comand search for the parts by name. When you find them, a picture is provided, and you can compare this to what he showed you on the engine, or print them out for him to ID. This supplier is one of many I use, and their prices are good, shipping fast.Steve

Or any other language for that matter. It's a really handy site. I use it a lot for English to German translation.Dick
Re: OT question for mechanics Reply #3 – November 08, 2007, 10:11:24 pm Yahoo Message Number: 85730Valve cover gasket. There is an Air Flow Sensor, or do they mean Oxygen Sensor? Joanna, if you would like to send me any Spanish names for parts, I can get them translated. Where is your son flying from? If from the SoCal area, I can get the proper parts to him (my former career was in the auto parts manufacturing and distribution, through several companies, and I still have lots of friends. You can email me directly at ken.sann @ gmail.comWas the truck brought down from the US? 4cyl, or V6? Contact me, I can help. And if your son isn't in the SoCal area, I can at least supply him with proper part #'s so that you can be assured that he gets the proper parts to you.ken wannabe in SoCal

Re: OT question for mechanics Reply #5 – November 08, 2007, 11:56:53 pm Yahoo Message Number: 85735You guys are wonderful! I looked on the site Steve listed but no pictures for these parts. Mimi did an eBay search and found a picture that is the Mass Air Flow Sensor - something like that - anyway, it looks like the part. We aren't buying it from eBay but it is a good picture and had a name. That auction with the picture is at http://tinyurl.com/3bx3auI also went out and took a couple pictures. This is the picture of where the gasket goes. http://www.baddog.com/images/forums/gasket.jpg and this is the picture of the air flow sensor http://www.baddog.com/images/forums/MAFM.jpgFor Larry, who kindly emailed me, it is a 1993 4 cyl toyota pickup made in the US and the model is 2RE.Kenn, that is a wonderful offer and I accept any help you can give. My son lives in Culver City and works close to where the 405 and the 10 cross. If we can figure out the part numbers, he can either go and pick them up or call you with a credit card. He WILL make time to do this - since he loves coming down here to his mom's condo on the Caribbean! They fly down here on the 18th so I don't have a lot of time. My email address is lou at baddog dot com As for my spanish, lordy lordy!! I do wish that I had remembered what he called it in spanish but it went right by me. I got the word sensor and that was it. He's way out in another part of the city and I didn't want to drive back out there just to ask him what the name was in spanish. I did learn how to say distributor cap though, tapa del distribuidor. We had one but it was the wrong part and he showed us where one piece was different.I have to say I'm impressed with him. He did some work already, he changed the fuel filter and cleaned the fuel injectors, put on new cables to the distributor cap and a new rotor. Those were all parts we had. He then explained what we needed to get and said not to pay him until he completed the work!! He gave us all the old parts and described how dirty the injectors and fuel filter were. I told him it would be a couple weeks before we got back with the parts and he just waved me on and said that was fine. I told him who recommended him to me when I first went there but other than that he doesn't know me from Eve. It took us 3 days to get the truck in, you go out there in the morning and he tells you if he can do it that day. Once he accepted it though, he locked it in his shop yard at night and - this is the really amazing part - they washed the truck!! It's an old beat up trucklet and it was very dirty. It's spotless now, we almost didn't recognize it.-- Jonna in Tortuga, 2001 Teal RB 'Tortuga' Find us MAPhttp://map.datastormusers.com/user2.cfm?user=1013> Follow the BLOG herehttp://www.baddog.com/blog/blog.html>
Re: OT question for mechanics Reply #6 – November 09, 2007, 06:51:03 am Yahoo Message Number: 85741Jonna,Maybe you should add your mechanic to our Maintenance database? Several LDers go down to Mexico (we will be down there in January), and it might be useful for someone. In any case, it will give a certain 'international flavor' to our listings.Good luck on your repairs and I hope your son has a good visit.Barry 2001 Red RB, TX http://map.datastormusers.com/user1.cfm?user=122
Re: OT question for mechanics Reply #7 – November 09, 2007, 07:17:14 am Yahoo Message Number: 85742Sounds like a valve cover gasket? However those can usually be substituted for with an RTV product..Garry

Separately, I will email you my cell phone #, and I will actually be at the store this coming Saturday (I run it for him once in a while so that the partners can take a Saturday off). We will get him all fixed up this Saturday, and I can assure you that he will get far better prices than any mechanic pays.ken wannabe in SoCal

If the truck is going to need brakes or other items in the near future, order them up now. Who knows what isn't available in Mexico.Larry Warm Mexico sounds much better than the cool, overcast weather we are now having.
Re: OT question for mechanics Reply #10 – November 10, 2007, 12:30:14 am Yahoo Message Number: 85759Done Barry, since the state is Yucatan it is the last entry in the database. I would take the LD to him as well. When we picked up the truck he had a Ford truck base with dual rear tires, Mimi thinks it was from the early 90's. They had removed whatever was on the back, probably some kind of delivery box, and were working on the engine. I don't think he could get an LD into his work yard but he told me he pays the neighbors to use all the parking on the street during the day. It's a nice neighborhood so I would feel safe staying there while he worked on Tortuga. Larry, I think I'll wait on getting any more parts. Remember that my son and his wife will be bringing this in their suitcases and I'm sure that she has other things she would rather have in her suitcase. The weather here is gorgeous, not too hot and not too humid. We had to turn the heater on in the jeep the other night, we're acclimated but it was chilly - probably low 70's. So, it is cool at night and mid 80's in the daytime with a slight breeze.Jonna ps. Barry, you'd better let us know if/when you come to the Yucatan!
