Don't you just love that such a small percentage of your gas taxes are spent on maintaining freeways?  Much less building new ones?
I've always said that after highway 580, which is horrible, I-5 is the worst highway in California.  We just went north on it almost a month ago and it jarred us all the way.   We were shocked when we came back south that it wasn't nearly as bad.  I don't think we were numb from the trip north, we had sat around at the Escapade and in Petaluma for a couple of weeks.
Somewhere around Anderson, we both looked at each other and said "what happened?  It's quiet, everything isn't rattling and falling".  I don't know if they just worked on the southbound lanes or what.  Perhaps they are going to start paying attention to this major artery between north and south.
Maybe Ah-nold has had to drive it back and forth to Sacto too many times .... oh but no, I'm sure he's always flown.  Whatever, I'm grateful.  If it is the governor, that's enough to keep my vote.

And a good field test would be to head down I-5, particularly in the California Central Valley.

Thanks a lot for that, CalTrans!!

I agree about how bad I-5 is, especially from LA north. We make the trip from Long Beach to Sacarmento ofter, to see out daughter and have found that Rte. 99 is much better. The truck traffic is less and and the road is better (marginally in spots) overall. There is less traffic trying to go 95 mph and you go through some towns to break it up. The difference in mileage is 1 mile. We are done with that stretch of I-5.

I15 between Barstow and Baker is much worse. Gas tax both Fed and Calif are used for other purposes even when taxed specifically for roads or transportation.
