Brake light Switch Help
Yahoo Message Number: 66229
Hi, A recently puchased a 1986 Chevy LD 22RB and though it has 140,000 miles, it was well cared for and drives like a dream.  I may put new shocks on it when I find a good deal.   I noticed the brake lights were not working so I replaced the fuse and although it seemed to fix it for a little while, the problem returned and the fuse seems fine.
Is there a brake light switch somewhere that needs replacement? I do not think it was the bulbs because they both worked fine after I replaced the fuse.

Finding the short could prove to be very difficult.  I had a short in the running lights on a vehicle several years ago.  I must have blown 30 fuses before I found the problem.  The wire to the licence plate light was short from the factory and after 100,000 miles of rubbing on the frame the insulation wore through.  The first thing I would check is the trailer light harness if it has one.  Take the lights loose from the body mountings and check around all the lights.  Trace the wireloom, as best you can, back to the dash.  Also look under the dash for some sort of old circuit (toad breaking) which might be connect to the break light circuit.  Good Luck.

Yes, there is a brake light switch and it sounds like that could be the problem.  Look way under the dash some where along the brake peddle arm.  Look for a little thing with some wires going to it and a plunger that contacts or should contact the brake arm somewhere when the brake is off.  It is a switch that is off when the plunger is pushed in and on when the plunger is not pushed in.  If you have a continuity tester you can test it,  or you can un-plug the wires and put a jumper across the 2 ends if the brake light comes on you have found the culprit. Good luck.  Gene

Thanks Gene, I will look at that area the next time I go get the rig.
It sounds right to me too.  Thanks again.  Joe

Could be, but usually they either work, or they don't.
Either way, I believe it is the small guillotine style, on the linkage above the pedal.
But overall, I agree with the other respondent, in that it is probably an intermittent short.
