This summer we will be heading to Yellowstone and then down to Grand Teton NP. Does anyone in the group have any good recomendations on where to stay and camp in Grand Teton NP?

Thanks

It has been several years but Jackson Lake was nice.  Tetons in the background.

We, too, are going to Yellowstone and then the Grand Tetons this summer. Although we've never been there before, I did a fair amount of research, and we decided to stay in the Grand Tetons at Colter Bay RV Park. We booked fairly yearly, don't know if you can still get a spot or not, but we felt it was a central location. Also had full hook-ups, and since we have a daughter, who still can't quite grasp the idea of a quick shower, that was important to us.

Hi Kathy,
You'll be in good company at Colter Bay RV Park. :-) We have 10 rigs from the NE LD group camping there on July 1 and 2, we'll be in Canyon Village in YNP on the 3rd & 4th and then Fishing Bridge on the 5th, 6th and 7th.

Of course, if you and the other rigs are leaving the 50th early, or are not going at all, the time/distance "caveat" is moot! ;-)

We stayed at Signal Mountain -- no hookups, but a few sites (about 4 out of 75) have great views of Jackson Lake and the Tetons.  Those premium sites get snatched up very quickly -- like by 7am.  It's a hilly campground and some sites at the top also have views.  Most sites are nicely spaced from each other with a fair amount of privacy.
There is one site in the campground that has water/electric and was available for rent when we were there.  It looked like a campground host site, but there was a sign on it that said it was available for $40/night (if I'm remembering correctly.)  The restrooms have toilets, but no showers.  There are pay showers (in the same building as the laundromat) available at Colter Village.  The water and dump station are located very close to the campground.  The Signal Mtn Lodge & restaurant is a short walk away.  You can walk down to the lake from the campground and the marina rents canoes and kayaks.  We were there last year -- the week before Labor Day and had no problem getting in, but it filled up over the holiday weekend.
We checked out all the other campgrounds in the area and, if you need hookups, I'd recommend Colter Bay Village.  It's an ok setting -- side by side sites in a pine forest (no views), but close to the hub of activity in the park.
Lizard Creek is another choice -- no hookups, but in a woodsy setting with a little more room between sites.  I believe that last year, the camp hosts were in a Lazy Daze.
Another choice is Gros Ventre.  It's located at the southeast side of the park, no hookups, but in a nice setting with a little more elbow room.  It's a large, open area with some cottonwood trees and has views of the Tetons.   The Gros Ventre river runs through it.
I think there was another campground with hookups called Flagg Ranch.
It was located at the very northern edge of the park and I don't remember it being particularly attractive.

Terry we stayed at Coulter Bay RV park last fall.   Not a spectacular park but not bad either.  We were parked a two minute walk from the shore of the lake and some spectacular scenery.  Enjoy!

We stayed at Colter Bay in June of 2004. Loved it, even if their Spring weather was on the rainy/cold side. You can't beat Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone. Full hookups, good sized sites. Both areas are so gorgeous they defy description.

Chris,
Thank you for your most informative reply on Teton NP. I also want to thank all the others that replied. I think that we will try to get a spot in the Gros Ventre campground. That one sounds very nice. I called Colter Bay RV Park and was not happy about some of their restrictions. They do not allow a gas grill or BBQ outside for cooking and no fires are allowed. Colter Bay is probably too commercial for our taste. Gros Ventre sounds great!

Thanks to all!

Ann,
I can't wait to get to Yellowstone. We made reservations last year for Grant Village and that's where we will be staying while there. I believe it's a shot distance to Fishing Bridge. Thanks!

Joan,

As a Rocky Mts. newby I'm open to any advice. We've planned I-80 to Rawlins, then 287 to Moran Junction. I show it to be 414.5 miles but won't quibble about the 15 mile difference.
I have us departing Cheyenne at 0600, stopping at Ft. Washakie for 1 hour and arriving at Colter Bay at 1430 (2:30pm). The reason I planned this way was there didn't seem to be anywhere interesting to camp along the way. Well, we're committed with reservations set.
Obviously you don't think this is realistic. Are the roads bad or just traffic-filled? Any scenic difference in the routes?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Linda,

Thanks for the tip on Colter Bay Campground. I did not know that a campground was next door. We called on Gros Ventre and the lady told me that the campground did not have trees and it was rather barren with scrub brush. That did not sound very appealing to us. I guess we will check out Colter Bay campground. They don't take reservations but the lady told me that we would not have a problem getting a spot in August. There are no hook-ups but that doesn't matter to us. I just hope that we have a lot of treees. Thanks

Hi Paul,
Don't sweat that drive; we've done it many times. The roads are fine and I seriously doubt you will find much traffic. IF you feel the need to shorten the day, there are camping options in Lander. I don't know if the arrival time is realistic, since you have reservations at Colter Bay your arrival time shouldn't be a big deal.
The only problems we've encountered while driving in Wyoming are the extremely heavy winds that are possible. Watch the gas needle drop when your head into those gales!;-)

Terry (and any others debating campgrounds in the Tetons)
Grand Teton and Yellowstone are our favorite travel destination. I'm starting to consider our Lazy Daze a Wyoming vacation home; we hope to be there soon and again in the Fall. These are our opinions of the camping options.
Much confusion about the Colter Bay camping. There are two distinctly different options at Colter Bay.
The Colter Bay RV Park is a huge campground with hookups. It is more like a village; campsites are pretty close to each other and you see most of your fellow RVers. I've been there a few times when we had a travel trailer; it can be a challenge getting level at many of the sites. The area is heavily wooded.
Colter Bay Campground is where we now camp. The campground is a series of loop roads that have sites spread along the loop roads. You could say that each site is a pull through since you pull into your site which is a short looping parking spot. You typically can see your neigbor that is in front of you and the one behind you and possibly another that is on the other side of the loop road. This campground is heavily wooded too. While you can see RVs on the other loops, they really aren't that noticable. There are areas set aside for non generator use but that is usually only used for the tenters or pop up campers. Some sites require effort to get level, but we seldom find that we need blocks to get level there.

Of those two camping choices, we prefer the Colter Bay Campground.
Someone mentioned Signal Mtn. We drove through there to check it out.
Our experience was that this campground was very tight for manuevering and most sites were on the small side. I don't see us even trying to camp there.
Lizzard creek is also quite tight. We think it more suited to smaller sized rigs. We won't try to camp there either.
Gros Ventre Campground is an interesting option. We checked it out last year to see how we liked it. It is quite different from the Colter Bay area. More of a scrub brush or cotton wood tree area. (Colter Bay is full of mature firs and pines) This campground is open into October and we plan to utilize it for the first time in autumn. Much closer to the town of Jackson Hole if you plan to dine in some resteraunts or shop.
We also camped at a KOA near Teton Village when we had a trailer. The location is OK, but we hated the campground. Never again.
Steve K. (hey, wasn't not needing stinking hookups one of the reasons we bought LDs? ;-)

It's not necessarily "unrealistic"; I just said that it's a "very long haul". The trip (on your proposed route) will likely take you at least 8 hours of driving time, primarily on two-lane roads (after you leave 80).  Around/before Dubois, you'll start to climb; Togowotee Pass is 9658', and the road is curvy and "slow" up to the pass and down into Moran Jct.  (The Togowotee is a beautiful drive, and the view of the Tetons that loom into view will stay with you forever.) I think that a 2:30 ETA is very "optimistic"; 4:00 or 4:30 would probably be closer to your actual arrival time.

You might also want to check the Wyoming DOT website for notices of any construction delays along 287; like most inter-mountain states, Wyoming has to do its road repairs literally "while the sun shines".
Have a good trip!

We rarely make reservations when we travel, and haven't had a problem finding a spot, even in tourist areas (the trick to this is to stop early in the day...we're usually off the road by 2 or 3, and almost always by 4).  We arrived at Colter Bay Campground in August 2004 and had the pick of many spaced in the campground.  It is heavily treed; fortunately, we were able to find a site where we were able to set up our Direcway.

There are several nice campgrounds in the park.  Coulter Bay is one of the nicest.  I would avoid the "RV Park."  It is too much like a parking lot for us.  None of the other campgrounds have hook-ups, though.
