As an Oregonian, I know that most of the state is out of cell phone coverage. Newcomers like the Stivers and many others probably don't realize just how skimpy cell phone coverage is out here.

 I can personally attest to this.  We do a lot of traveling in Oregon...spent most of last summer in the state after we finished camp hosting in northern California.  We use Verizon, and there are very few areas, outside of major metropolitan areas, where Verizon digital service is available.  Most of the state that we have traveled in is either "Extended Area" or "Roaming."  And even the "Extended" areas are often analog, not digital.
 However...and this could be classified under "go figure"... last summer when we were traveling near Christmas Valley, southeast of Bend, OR (out in the middle of Nowhere, Oregon), and I happen to glance at our phone...we had all 5 bars and were in a Verizon digital area!
