Hi I've been reading the list but just joined so I could post and look at the extra goodies. =)

Probably won't be abe to afford a LD (or anything besides our current tent) for ages and ages, but in the meantime I can dream.

The one question I have is, that the over cab beds don't look like they're very tall. Is it claustrophobic? Is sleeping 2 people up there a problem? Years ago my husband and I camped in a pickup camper, but I was younger and didn't have to get up to pee so many times a night. ;o)
Also, the ultimate dream would be to fulltime or at least be able to spend all summer campground hosting. Having spent 3 years living in a semi driving cross country, I know I can live in a very small space while traveling but I do know I have certain requirements.

I've found that not having a comfortable bed is one thing that definitely keeps me from enjoying any camping experience. I was thinking about adding a memory foam topper or just replacing the existing mattress with a memory foam one (it's the closest thing to the waterbed we have). That would leave even less space between the bed and the ceiling (depending on how tall the mattress it comes with is).

How tall is the existing mattress and how much space is there between the top of it and the ceiling?
Do a lot of people just use the sofa/king option? I can't see myself making and unmaking a bed, so that would mean losing the lounge space.

Any advice you all can give is tremendously welcome.

Liz

Jan and I have used both the overhead, with memory foam topper, and the rear sofa bed made up to king size.
I'm tall, but skinny, so with a bit of difficulty can manage to crawl over the wife without waking her. So I get the forward part of the overhead bed when we use that.
We prefer the rear sofas made up into a king though. With topper, this is super comfy, almost as nice as our mattress at home.

Liz,
We use the overhead bed with a 1 1/2" memory foam topper from Camping world exclusively.  (We have only made out the couch and dinette beds for relatives.)
Initially it felt a bit close and possibly even claustrophobic.  It did not take long however before it felt snug and cosy.

It's nice to have a ready-made bed that you can flop down and have ready for use

Sorry  Forgot to answer your questions:

The overhead mattress is about 3 1/2" thick and it is 22" from the top of the mattress to the ceiling.

We also used the rear sofas made up into the super-king bed in almost two years full-timing in our MB.  One of the most comfortable beds we've ever had!  If you don't want to spend 5 minutes or so making the bed get a sleep sack on top of a foam topper you can roll up and down in less than a minute.  This is about the same as you would do if you slept in the cab over because I don't think you'll want to drive with the over cab bed ready to jump into.

Others here have used a sleep sack as I've described.  We have not.
Perhaps they could comment.

best,  paul

We always use the twin sofas made into a king bed. A couple of years ago we bought a queen Travasack, anticipating a move to the cabover bed. I found the Travasack too confining so we never used it. That bed has a 2 1/5" topper on it. Somehow we could never make ourselves give up the comfort of the rear bed so I bought another foam topper for the rear, California king size and queen size cotton duvet cover that fits the king mattress topper (after some slight trimming of the side). We use a light weight down queen comforter with a soft flannel duvet cover as our only blanket. The duvet cover for that makes a comfy sheet in warmer weather. The 2 duvet covers are easy to wash. I'm basically lazy and got very tired of tucking in sheets and blankets so this was my solution. The memory foam topper gets rolled, wrapped in bungees and stored in our under the refrigerator cabinet. Pillows and comforter go on the overcab bed. This is much less complicated than it sounds because the whole process takes us about 5 minutes and that includes converting the dinette to a bed.

We always leave the cab over bed in the down position...we use it as storage, so we need the room.  It does mean bending over to get into and out of the seat, but it hasn't been a problem for us.
I, too, highly recommend the sleep sacks.  We have 2 twin-size Travasaks...Earl sleeps in the overhead and I sleep on one of the couches pulled out.

You don't have to zip up both sides...I sleep in my Travasak with both zippers unzipped.

How much are you storing up there?  I don't think you're supposed to put much up there.

Paul, what we have up there doesn't amount to much weight.  Since Earl sleeps in the overhead, his memory foam pad, Travasak, and pillows are up there.  Then that's where I store my memory foam pad, Travasak, and pillows during the day.  Other than a small box of books that sits in a corner, that's about all that is up there.  But, if we were to fold the overhead bed up each day, that would mean that Earl would have to roll up his memory foam pad and Travasak, too...way too much trouble for just not having to bend over getting into and out of the cab area!

Paul,

I have to disagree with you about the time to make up the overhead bed.  We use a sleep sack, which has a strap under the hinged bed part.  When we get up, we just toss the ladder up on the bed near the front wall, flip the bed up, and are ready to go.  The pillows stay

Well OK. 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or even 10 minutes.  I won't argue how much time it takes to get ready for bed is the various places.  I've just never understood the need for speed while camping...
Even with an island bed many will spend a minute or 2 making it up in the morning, and many will even add a pretty bed spread.
I really don't think we spent more than 5 minutes making up the twin sofas

Linda, I agree with you.  We leave our bed made over the cab and just straighten it and close the curtains!  That's one of the best things about our LD.  No fuss! Mary
