Direcway being spot beamed?

full-times and uses DirecWay as his internet hookup.  He told me yesterday that DirecWay is making some kind of change at the end of the year which could greatly impact RV users.  The way he explained it was that they would be going to spot beams which would make it very unusable unless you were camped near a large city.  He had a name for the new service, but I can't remember it.


 After reading the above, I email Margo of Maxwell Satellite.  Here's what she has to say:
 "As far as I know, spot beam in not in the future. For one thing, the Ku-band satellites currently in use are not designed for spot beam coverage.
 The new owners of Direcway are launching a new satellite (Spaceway service) that will be spot beam technology for Ka band use only. I think the target is broadcasters and remote (but fixed) locations. The dish is smaller and the transmitter is much more powerful.
 It might be worth while to post this on Datastormusers.com and see what Don Bradner has to say. He is the only "expert" out there that I take seriously. He will probably tell us more than we want to know about spot beam technology.

 So, those of us with the tripod-mounted Direcway systems don't need to worry about them going to spot beam.

Right.  There is a spot beam service already available.  Check out "wild blue"  Some pretty lively and funny past discussions on the subject at DatastormUsers.com (if they haven't been deleted).
