Door latch

I purchased from Lazy Daze an additional bathroom door and latch for my 2003 Twin-King.  I used this door for a pantry that I had built.  The latch worked perfectly until now.  It won't latch anymore or stay closed.  I took everything out of the pantry including the shelves to make sure that nothing was blocking the latch.  It still wouldn't stay closed.  I'm getting ready to go to the NorthEast LD gathering on Thursday and would appreciate any suggestions on fixing the latch and/or keeping the door closed if I can't get the latch fixed.  Thank you in advance.

Monica,
I can't give you a quick fix, but our door latch stopped "latching" a few months ago. My husband took a look and thought that a spring had popped out. I called the LD factory, and they sent us a new one for about $7 plus S/H.

I have just broken my third plastic female half of the door latch and don't have any spares. Does anyone know if LD has developed a fix for this most fragile part of an LD?

I sense a business opportunity here: buy a couple gross of these door "keeps" from LD, haul them to Cheyenne, and hawk them at cost plus 10%! I might even make enough to pay for the original shipping from LD!

I don't think there's a new product or a "fix", Paul, but if you're coming to the 50th, I'll save you a couple!  ;-)

I can't remember who, but someone gave us a metal latch to replace the plastic one, so I'm sure they're out there somewhere.  If I can find it (ours hasn't broken yet, so we have yet to replace it) I will post the brand.

I can say that we've given away the three extra plastic ones that some on this board suggested we buy when we picked up the rig, so it's been good to have the spares (vbut I've held on to the metal one for us : 0 )

I don't know whether this would be a good replacement for the door latches, or not.  We can no longer use our LD door latch, since we had a Window Maxx vent added to the window above the sofa on our 30'TB.  I didn't realize it when we ordered it, but it can only be put on the end of the window closest to the door, because of the way the window slides.  Now, when we open the door, even if the wind catches it and slams it against the LD, it just bounces off the Lexan vent.  To keep the door in an open position, we have to use a bungee cord looped around the handle and hooked to the latch arm protruding from the LD.  It works, but looks a bit tacky.

The vent itself does a great job of providing ventilation, even if it's raining, along with an open covered roof vent.  We also have one in the bedroom, on the non-emergency exit window.

Kate,

Are we lucky enough that the mounting holes for this Foland product fit the existing holes drilled in the LD's side? I cringe at the thought of drilling new holes without knowing what exactly is behind the skin.

You're a sweetheart but, if I can't find a good alternative, I'll be ordering some extras from LD this week. See you in Cheyenne!

Hi Paul,

Don't know if you have Camping World in your neck of the woods, but the CW in my neighborhood stocks those latches. In my experience, the best way to ensure never needing to replace it again is to buy plenty of spares!:-) Anytime I buy extra parts I tend to misplace them before I need 'em again! Works for me!

I also think if you paint them before you put them on, they tend to last better. Something about the sunlight causing the plastic to break down more quickly if its not painted.

Paul,
One of the primary reasons these break so often is that the male part is not hitting the female part evenly.  You can check this by opening the door until the parts just touch and then see if you can slide a piece of paper between the parts on one side or the other.  The metal male part should touch both parts of the female part at the same time.
If it doesn't just bend one of the metal legs in a bit until they mate properly.  Of course you need to replace your broken female piece before you can check this.
