Intellipower converter upgrade
Yahoo Message Number: 58310
I have installed the Intellipower 60 Amp PD9160A converter and have had mostly good results.  Seeing that the solar control panel was acting flaky when plugged in to shore power, I removed the fuse to the solar panel.  After filling the battery to the bottom of the filler necks as best I could, I checked it several times, then let it go for several months. (I plan on ordering the special battery filler soon to solve the problem of over/underfill.)  When I finally checked it again, it had boiled over and the acid had eaten away at the battery hold down device where it hooks on to the rails.   I cleaned everything up and repaired the hold down and put the fuse back into the solar panel circuit.  So far it seems ok.  I may have gotten too much water into the battery but I am wondering if anyone has had this problem and if the solar panel is compatible with the Intellipower installation.

Morris:

This has nothing to do with your power source.  As soon as you said you filed to the bottom of the filler necks, I knew you would bubble over - these batteries always do.  Fill to 1/2 the way between the plates and the bottom of the filler neck, or buy the special filer.
When I got the special filler, I didn't realize how much my batteries had splattered over all these years.  This is the first time that the battery compartment is prefectly clean - no battery salts to constantly clean up.

Good luck.

Let's see, how do I say "absolutely correct, I'll second that" and still add something worthwhile to the thread so this isn't a "me- too" post? (g) Oh, I know . . .
If you ever do find the tops of the plates exposed, not covered with electrolyte, *do not* fill the cells to even half way between the plates and bottom of the filler neck as is normally correct as Gus says. Instead, only add distilled water until the plates are just covered. Then charge the batteries for at least several hours before adding more distilled water to fill the cells to the normal level.

I too, strongly recommend the Pro-Fill. No hassle, no mess, easy, and pretty darn amazing. And probably still on sale at Camping World.
