Satellite & internet access

============================ Andy says:  If you use a Mac, SmithMicro's QuickLink Mobile software (about $35) plus a $30 data cable will get you online quite easily; the software does all the hard work.

I have an imac G5 and I'm on Cable rather than dialup here at home.  Would the above software and cable get me online since I wouldn't be hooked up to cable while traveling? The G5 unit is one-piece.   Bye.  FRANCES

Having a cell phone you can use to connect your computer to the Internet is a good idea as a backup plan if your satellite internet service isn't working for some reason.

There's a Yahoo group that can help Mac users connect to the Internet using a cell phone.
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maccellphone/

The comparable group for Windows users is
 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/internetbycellphone/

Both groups have FAQ files to get you started, and knowledgeable participants who help resolve problems.

You can connect your computer to the Internet using your basic cell phone plan.  There's no need to purchase more expensive "national access" or "business" plans.  Your internet connect time is charged to your plan's monthly cell phone minutes.
Try to connect during night and weekend time periods when minutes of use aren't charged to your plan.

You'll need a phone that can transmit and receive digital signals to take advantage of the Internet access.
But don't select a phone that is digital-only.  Analog service is often all that's available in remote locations.
Check with your cell phone company to make sure your phone can work with digital and analog signals.

QuickLink Mobile works with both my 20" iMac G5 and my 12"  PowerBook. I use a Motorola T-730 phone (there are others that will work, but this is the one I have experience with) and a Motorola brand data cable.
If you use a Motorola phone, I strongly recommend buying the cable directly from Motorola's ewbsite. Some third-party "OEM" or "compatible" data cables don't work...and  Motorola's cable is the only one I have seen that lets you connect the power adapter to the phone while you are online, so you can use it without running down the battery in the middle of a session.
