Shipping a Lazy Daze To England.
Yahoo Message Number: 58029
Dear Sir, I may be completing a purchase of a Lazy Daze motor home soon, God Willing. I wish to thank your goodselves for your considerable assistance and goodwill in this matter.

My next question is:- does anyone have any knowledge of shipping a motor home overseas? My plan is to either drive it across the USA from California (to either Baltimore or New York) and then ship it to England or, to ship it from San Francisco as I'm having some difficulty in obtaining insurance with an English driving licence. I have been informed that not all shipping agents are scrupulous so any help would be most appreciated.

PS. Information on insurance would be most welcome.

Yours faithfully,

G Graham.

Be sure to understand the British regulations that apply to importing a vehicle of foreign manufacture.  It can be very expensive to modify a non-conforming vehicle to meet national safety and environmental rules.  Assembling the necesary paperwork for all the agencies involved is a Sisyphean task.

Regarding shippers, a quick Google search turned up this firm, specialising in vehicle transport between UK and USA.

At least a few of us are interested in taking LDs to distant lands. Let the group know what you find out.

You might also give thought to what shore power you would hook it to.
Everything in the coach is rated for 120V, 60 cycles per second.
England's standard power is 220V, 50 cycles per second.  Changing the electrical system to 220V would require a good deal of effort and cost.

From what I've read, you'll find very few places to dump your Lazy Daze's holding tanks in England and Europe. Most motorhomes over there are very small by American standards and use either "Porta-Potti" style portable toilets or small, removable "cassette" holding tanks. In either case you are expected to remove the waste container and physically carry it  to a toilet or dump hole where you pour it in. This would not be possible with an American RV's large (80-100 liter), in-built holding tanks.

Another interesting point, along with what to do about power.  I know a lot of people do this.  I wonder how?  We met a couple from England at a BusNuts rally several years ago who came over to the U.S. to buy a motorhome.  They purchased a 40-foot American Eagle diesel pusher, and spent a year over here touring the U.S.  So obviously it was built to U.S. standards.  Then they shipped the American Eagle to England and used it to full-time while touring Europe.  We lost touch with them or I would ask how they were overcoming what has been mentioned here.  In this case, we are not talking about a tiny (by comparison) class-C motorhome, but a big diesel pusher with the huge holding tanks, and voracious appetite for power.  I suspect they used the diesel generator for power, but It would be really interesting to find out.
They did write to say some of those roads in Spain were pretty dicey with a motorhome 40-foot long and 8-1/2-foot wide!  :-)

Dick:

It's common to see, at least in Italy, big motorhomes (by american standards), normally with german license tags.

I saw many of them at a camping park at Chechina, near Livorno (Tuscany). You can see the Isola d'Elba (Elba island, where Napoleon was enprisoned for the first time) from the beach, near the horizon.
All the Formula 1 teams have some of these really big ones, but they normally go from speedway to speedway.
Still beats me the severe limitations that these widebodies must face in the older cities, and in european old, narrrow roads. In almost all english. socttish and irish countrysides the roads are really narrow... Anyway, they have buses running all over these places... But I wouldn't be really confortable in a big american motorhome (or even a LD) facing a bus in a blind turn...(and there are a lot of them there, specially at the scottish Highlands).

You don't have to go to Europe to enjoy the opportunities narrow roads offer.  Baja California offers many opportunities to improve your driving skills.
Facing a huge new Volvo bus on a blind mountain turn is one thing but watching one PASS a car on one is quite another....

In my experience the busses and 18 wheelers are not the problem in Baja.  Their drivers are very capable and professional.  When you're not sure of clearance it's very acceptable to slow down or even stop on the highway.  The drivers of odd trucks like a construction company's are another matter.

best,  paul

Well I can find you the web pages of several people from outside the US that have bought an RV and driven around the country, I am sure the insurance issue is one that can be overcome. If you are interested I will find some of the web pages for you and you can try to contact some of them for information on insurance and other issues.
