Ladybug is now a tour bus! Our d.i.l.'s mother and nephew are visiting from Macedonia and the whole family wanted to see the Statue of Liberty - 5 adults, one teenager and one absolutely adorable 3 month old ;-).
It isn't a long ride for us, just about an hour. The exit was a little tricky heading north because all 4 or 5 exit 14's get off at the same place.  Traffic was light on a weekday and everything was clearly marked. There were no pull through parking spots that I could see but the spaces were big enough for a nice 40' Beaver to fit next to us(drool, dribble green face etc). Hubby and crew took off on the ferry while mom  and I stayed behind. There's a very nice walkway along the river with benches and a playground.
Strong police presence noted if safety is a concern. There's a sign on the walkway listing the names of the buildings on the NY skyline with the twin towers still there.
This was my first time back since 9/11 and I'll admit to getting a little choked up at the sight of the empty space.

The trip was such a success that my son wants to retire at 35 and travel and my d.i.l.'s nephew plans to hide in the closet when they have to leave.
This is a little off topic but it was an eye opener for me to see our country through their eyes. My d.i.l.'s father is chief of staff at the second biggest hospital in Macedonia and the family is wealthy by their standards. They had never - been in an elevator, eaten peanut butter, steak, lobster, clams, - seen fireworks, ridden in a boat, watched cable tv and on and on. I took the 12 year old boy to Kohls for some clothes.
He was so excited and couldn't begin to look because the size of the store was overwhelming. We have so many things that we take for granted and this summer has been a wonderful experience for me too. Back on topic, they loved our 22' TK. They sat in the back enjoying the view from the big windows while our d.i.l. acted as tourguide.

Karen, I loved your tourist story.  What a kick to introduce someone to peanut butter or an elevator for the first time!  And your daughter-in-law's family is indeed adventuresome to try all those "new" foods!  Yes, we Americans do take so much for granted, and your experience was such a refreshing counterpoint to the negative headlines greeting us daily.  Thank you for sharing.

" What a kick to introduce someone to peanut butter or an elevator for the first time!"

Oops! I meant to say escalator. They do have elevators. I think the 12 year old gained 20 pounds from trying all the new food. Imagine never tasting a Reeses Peanutbutter Cup? Today I introduced him to a chocolate covered strawberry and tonight he's begging for one more ear of fresh corn on the cob. The downside for them is that they have one of the healthiest diets in the world but American fat food is so tasty.
McDonalds is expensive there but it's quickly becoming a favorite.

Hmmm, Ladybug needed the workout, to stay remotely on topic ;-)
