Shiny new 26MB at Carson, NV Costco?
Yahoo Message Number: 57084
A week back, there was a new LD and Jeep toad at the Carson, NV parking lot. I, of course, knocked on the door hoping to introduce myself, but alas, the proud owners were obviously inside shopping.
Since I was done, with frozen food getting warm, I didn't wait.

It is surprising how many LD's one *doesn't* see out there! On a typical trip of a thousand miles or so out west, we see maybe one but often none. When we do see one going the other way, we always honk, flash (our lights!) and try to call 'em on CB channel 30. The CB has yet to be effective for this or much else.
So, darn it, all you other LD'ers out there stay on the look-out for Yonder and make sure to say, "Hi!" Note that "Yonder" spends almost all her time in my hangar, so the chances of actually seeing her on the road are slim. This situation is made yet worse by the addition of a new "puppy" to our home. The puppy being a new Husky A1-B bush plane.  This thing lands almost anywhere in 400' and takes off in 200'.
Last week we were coming home from visiting a ranch in OR, when we saw a number of Mustang herds, the last and biggest, some 50 horses, being just south of the Black Rock desert. We hadn't dropped down to see the others up close, but we did for the large herd. It was just after sun- up and the herd was loosely split into 4 groups, all running south. We did a wing-over and slowed to flap speed (80 miles per hour) then slowed to 60 mph to come alongside the main group at about 20 feet above the ground and offset far enough that we wouldn't spook and scatter the horses, risking their injury. There was one momma and her youngster from this last spring bringing up the rear, manes and tails flying.

We didn't have a camera handy, but the image of that herd will stay with me none-the-less, just awesome.

I'll post a small pic of our new dog in the Yonder album for those curious.

On a recent 2600m round trip to N. Wisc with side trip to Marquette, MI, we saw only 1 LD.  Spent $750 on gas; averaged 8.1 mpg towing Honda Accord and carrying 4 adults, 2 children, one dog and all the luggage in the Honda.  All flat country driving at about 63 mph.  We were probably maxed out on weight.  Gas at start of trip was $2.36; return trip $2.47 on average (87 octane).  Now it's $2.50 at Costco in Denver (85 octane).

Small world... there's two of us 26 RB up here in Lake Tahoe... both shiny and look new, but ten years old.  Just took Normy (ours) to Horizon parking lot last nite to tail-gate and listen to Eagles concert in cheap seats.  Saw them in the expensive seats inside last week; they were so good we went back in style for free!

Chris, do you put the 85 octane in your rig? On our return from the M'ship last year I did use it once with no apparent issues. However, the manual sez 87 octane only.
Since we will be in your beautiful state in a week, I know I will be facing the $2.50 for 85 octane or $2.75 for 87 octane dilemma again.

What year is your Honda Accord? I'm currently looking at a year 2000 Honda Civic 4dr VP sedan. Any comments?

No, Dave.  I use 87 all the time.  Mountain area reg. gas (85 oct.) turns to 87 octane somewhere in Nebraska when the altitude gets lower.  Usually buy gas at Costco which has only 85 and 91, so I blend them.  I was on empty when arriving home last Monday and filled up.
Next day it jumped 20 cents a gal.

It's a 1995 with around 100,000 miles on it.  It tows very easily and is simple to set up:  start engine; put foot on brake; shift to drive; allow tranny to engage; shift to neutral; turn ignition to auxilary.

From what I've heard and read on this forum, most all Hondas tow easily.

Chris (and other Accord owners), Thanks for your trip report.  I too have have seen very few LD's on the road and never been able to make contact on Channel 30.
I also appreciated your info on the towability of your Accord and I know you speak from experience.
I would like to know which Accords, with automatic transmissions, are towable. Does anyone have an Accord that came with an Owner's Manual that states that it is OK to tow it with all four wheels turning? The 2005 Motorhome Dinghy Towing Guide does not list any Honda passenger cars as being towable in that manner. The only Hondas it lists are the CRV, Element, and Pilot.
Sadly, the same is true for the Toyota Camry. And,I have checked more than once to see if the Toyota Hybrid Prius could be towed flat and was told that it can not. To make matters worse, REMCO does not even make a lube pump for the Prius.

Hey, Chris,
If 4 adults, 2 kids, 1 dog, and all the luggage were in the Accord, who was driving the LD?
Sorry - couldn't resist.  Sounds like you had another great trip, and from your earlier post, it appears you confortably managed with all the gang in the LD.

Here is an interesting thread on the Odyssey.  Although not an Accord, it may give you some insight into the current generation of Hondas.
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/15718370.cfm.  The Honda Accord has always been my favorite tow vehicle, and that is true of many I have known.  Used to belong to the Northwest Bus Nuts (sans bus) and you would see Honda Accords all over at the rallies.  Now, I would be very cautious about towing the latest Accords.  Do a Google on Honda Accord towing and you will see some negative comments regarding the 05's.  I know the generation 3, 4, and 5 Accords were easily towable with 4 down and auto transmission.  The generation 6 and 7's need a lot more research.

Nate, here's what the manual says for my 1995 Honda Accord with auto. tranny.   It is in reference to being towed by a tow truck and is silent on being towed by an RV:  "If due to damage, your car must be towed with the front wheels on the ground, do the following..." It then spells out "start the engine; shift to D4; then to N, turn off engine."  However, to be towed the ignition must be in the auxiliary position to keep the steering wheel from locking.

Sorry I can't speak for any other models except this one.

This site - http://tinyurl.com/8q62w - will take you to an offical statement of position by Honda of America on towing of auto-equppped Hondas four down. It is undated and should be verified by calling American Honda Motor Co. Inc. (National Consumer Affairs) at 800-999-1009.

Thanks Richard, Chris, and Paul for your responses to this post.  And thanks to Roz and to Bill for your responses to my question concerning Route 2 in Nebraska.

Yup...other than the Lazy Dazers who came to see us while we were camp hosting, we have yet to see another LD out on the road this summer.
